Bolivia Beat Brazil World Cup Qualifying

Bolivia used altitude to their advantage to beat the mighty Brazil 1-0 in their final FIFA World Cup 2026 qualifier on Tuesday.

The victory, combined with Venezuela’s loss to Colombia, allowed Bolivia to become CONMEBOL’s representative for next year’s inter-confederation World Cup play-offs. They finished seventh in the rankings with 20 points from 18 games, registering a goal difference of -18.

A six-team play-off tournament, comprising one team each from CONMEBOL, OFC, AFC, CAF, and two from CONCACAF, will determine the last two FIFA World Cup spots. The four lower-ranked teams in the FIFA World Rankings will play single-elimination matches. The winners will advance to face the top two teams for World Cup slots.

Bolivia Beat Brazil at Altitude to Secure World Cup Play-Off Spot

Bolivia hosted Brazil, who are 8/1 with football betting sites to win the FIFA World Cup, in El Alto on Tuesday night. Carlo Ancelotti fielded a strong starting XI away from home, featuring Richarlison, Lucas Paqueta, and Bruno Guimaraes, among others.

However, the Brazilians ran out of steam pretty quickly, which allowed Bolivia to take control. Miguel Terceros scored the only goal of the game from the penalty spot, but it was not the hosts’ only opportunity. They took 22 shots, 10 of which landed on target, generating an xG of 1.78.

How Altitude Helps Bolivia

Historically, Bolivia have held their home matches in La Paz, the highest administrative capital in the world. At an elevation of 3,650 metres, games in La Paz gave Bolivia an edge. Their players naturally played up to their potential, whereas opponents, irrespective of their quality, struggled due to the thin air at this altitude.

Lionel Messi’s Argentina were the last team to beat Bolivia and altitude in a competitive match. La Albiceleste beat them 3-0 in La Paz in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers in 2023.

Allegedly influenced by that result, they have since moved their games to El Alto, the city right next to La Paz. Interestingly, El Alto sits even higher, at an altitude of 4,150 metres.

With the result against Brazil, they have once again proven how important geography is to their performance. Away from home, they have lost all but one qualifier, with it coming against Chile in September 2024. Between 1993 and 2024, they did not win a single competitive game away from home.

Venezuela Fail to Secure World Cup Play-Off Spot

Venezuela needed to avoid defeat in their final World Cup qualifier against Colombia to finish seventh in the rankings. They went ahead twice in the game, but eventually suffered a total collapse, losing 6-3 to the visitors.

Telasco Segovia fired Venezuela in front in the third minute, but Yerry Mina equalised in the 10th minute. Josef Martinez made it 2-1 for Venezuela, and the hosts managed to hold on for 30 minutes before Luis Suarez turned up the heat.

Suarez scored four consecutive goals for Colombia before Salomon Rondon scored the third goal for  Venezuela. In the 78th minute, Jhon Cordoba landed the final blow, making it 6-3 on the night.
