Premier League side Burnley will host Cardiff City at Turf Moor in the EFL Cup Third Round on Tuesday night.
Top-flight side Burnley are the logical favourites, but Cardiff City’s impressive form suggests an upset could be on the cards.
Burnley vs Cardiff City EFL Cup Preview and Team News
Preview
Owing to the competitiveness of the Premier League, newly promoted sides always find it difficult to stay afloat. Last season, we saw Leicester City, Ipswich Town, and Southampton drop to the Championship in their first season back in the English top flight.
This season, Burnley, Leeds United, and Sunderland have joined from the Championship. In his Premier League predictions, Alan Shearer predicted all three will return to the second division in May.
Sunderland and Leeds United have shown that they have the quality to prove Shearer wrong, as they sit a good few points away from the drop zone. Burnley, however, have struggled, amassing only four points from five games.

They have secured one win, played out one draw, and suffered three defeats. The Clarets are currently on a three-game winless run, with their last victory coming against Sunderland on 23 August. Due to their poor results, Burnley are 5/12 with football betting sites to get relegated this season.
Cardiff City, on the other hand, have claimed 17 points from eight matches in the Championship. They have won five matches, drawn two, and lost only once, climbing to fourth place in the Football League One rankings.
Unfortunately for Cardiff City, their only defeat of the season came on Saturday. A clinical Bradford City claimed a 3-1 victory over wasteful Cardiff, inflicting the first defeat upon Brian Barry-Murphy’s side in 11 matches.
Team News
Burnley will have to make do without Jordan Beyer, who is nursing a knee injury. Manager Scott Parker, however, has assured that Beyer’s recovery is going well.
Despite having a near-full squad, the Clarets may not be at their strongest at Turf Moor on Tuesday. The team want to stay afloat this season, and Parker could make changes to keep his players fresh for this weekend’s Premier League clash with Manchester City.

Burnley vs Cardiff City Prediction and Best Bet
Scott Parker is likely to make plenty of changes for the game on Tuesday night, which will make the game more even on paper. We do not think there will be anything to separate the two teams at 90 minute, meaning the game will be decided on penalties. In the shootout, we are backing Cardiff City to get the win.
