Pedro, who was also a reported target for Newcastle United, is set to join alongside Jamie Gittens. Chelsea have agreed a deal with Borussia Dortmund to sign the winger for £55.5m.
But are the pair eligible to feature for the Blues at the Club World Cup? The West Londoners are next in action in the quarter-finals against Palmeiras in the early hours of Saturday morning.
Can Joao Pedro Play for Chelsea at the Club World Cup?
FIFA allow clubs to make changes to their Club World Cup squads up until Thursday, 3 July.
Therefore, if Pedro is registered as a Chelsea player by then, he will be able to play from the quarter-final onwards.
With his medical now complete and just the official announcement and unveiling left to formalise the transfer, fans are expecting the 23-year-old to make his debut at the tournament.
Additionally, several outlets report that the forward WILL be registered in time to feature.
Gittens, meanwhile, is ineligible to feature for the Blues at the Club World Cup. This will be the case even if the England U21 international completes his move before the 3 July deadline.
But why is Gittens’ case different from Pedro’s? Well, it is due to the fact that the young winger has already featured for Dortmund at the tournament.
The 20-year-old made a brief cameo for BVB in their opening group stage match against Fluminense.
Consequently, he will have to wait until the start of the Premier League campaign to make his debut for the club.
What Next for Chelsea at the Club World Cup?
As previously mentioned, the Blues are next in action against Palmeiras in the quarter-finals.
The fixture will be played at 02:00am on Saturday morning at the Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia. If victorious, a semi-final clash against Fluminense or Al-Hilal awaits on Tuesday.
Of course, Chelsea were one of two Premier League teams that were in the Club World Cup.
Manchester City were the other English side playing out in the U.S., however they crashed out of the tournament on Tuesday morning after a shock 4-3 defeat to Al-Hilal in the last-16.
On the other side of the bracket, awaiting the Blues if they reach the final, are the likes of Paris Saint-Germain, Bayern Munich, Real Madrid/Juventus and Dortmund/Monterrey.
