The City Of Troy post position has been revealed for Saturday’s Breeders’ Cup Classic – as the Aidan O’Brien-trained Derby winner has been handed gate 3.

City Of Troy Post Position Announced For Breeders’ Cup Classic – Can Derby Winner End 26-Year Draw Drought?
The Breeders’ Cup Classic has NOT seen a winner from post position 3 since Awesome Again won at Churchill Downs in 1998 – meaning City Of Troy will need to end a 26-year spell with no winners from this gate.
However, on a plus, the last twice the race was staged at Del Mar (2017 and 2021) the winners came from gates 4 and 5 – which many horse racing fans will argue are close to City Of Troy’s gate 3.
Last year’s winner White Abarrio won from Breeders’ Cup Classic post position 2, while the classy Flightline won from gate 4 in 2022.
The City Of Troy tactics are expected to see this season’s Epsom Derby winner race up with the pace, so gate 3 would be a help.
However, this is all reliant in the horse breaking well and with this his first race on dirt – a lot on this score has to be taken on trust.

Despite the Breeders’ Cup moving around to different tracks most years, it’s still worth noting the recent Breeders’ Cup Classic post positions that the winning horses came from.
The meeting has been held at Del Mar racecourse in California twice before – in 2017 and 2021.
In 2017 the Breeders’ Cup Classic winner Gun Runner at Del Mar came from gate 5, while in 2021 the winner Knicks Go hailed from stall 4.

City Of Troy’s Main Rivals Get Breeders’ Cup Classic Post Positions 1 and 9
When looking at the best horse racing betting sites in the UK, City Of Troy’s main rivals look to be Fierceness for trainer Todd Pletcher, who won the Classic in 2019, and Forever Young from Japan.
Fierceness has been handed Breeders’ Cup Classic post position 9, while Kentucky Derby third Forever Young will start two places inside City Of Troy in gate 1.
Since 2016, gate 9 has done well too – with Authentic winning in 2020 and Arrogate in 2016.
