Trainer Lucinda Russell (and Michael Scudamore) are yet to train the winner of the Coral Gold Cup – or the Hennessy to older racing folk. But that could all change this Saturday as they’ve one of the big fancies in Myretown.
This eight year-old will head to Newbury having won three of his last four chase starts and there are also several Coral Gold Cup trends in his favour.
Suggesting the Cheltenham Festival winner is the one to be with in the ITV Racing contest this weekend.
Lucinda Russell Myretown Is “One Of The Best Ones We’ve Trained”

Stable confidence coming into the Coral Gold Cup is high too.
With his trainer Lucinda Russell, who has trained two Grand National winners, saying Myretown is “One Of The Best Ones We’ve Trained”.
However, despite not winning the race yet – Russell, who now trains alongside her son-in-law Michael Scudamore – does have many links to the big Newbury Handicap.
Husband Peter rode the winners in 1988 (Strands Of Gold) and 1991 (Chatham).
Plus Peter’s son Tom Scudamore bettered his dad with three Coral Gold Cup wins on Madison du Berlais (2008), Sizing Tennessee (2018) and Cloth Cap (2020).
So Myretown, who was an easy winner of the Ultima Chase at the Cheltenham Festival in March, will be looking to give the family more success in Saturday’s Coral Gold Cup.
And if you are in his corner – there is further good news, with several big Coral Gold Cup trends in his favour.
SIX Key Coral Gold Cup Trends That Myretown Ticks 📈
91% Of The Last 23 Coral Gold Cup Winners Were Aged 8 Or Younger
Okay, a lot of the 2025 Coral Gold runners will tick the box here.
But with only two winners aged nine or older since 1999, then I’m happy to put a line through the older legs here.
Plus, one of these older Hennessy winners was the mighty Denman (nine) in 2009. With the other the ten year-old Sizing Tennessee in 2018.
Myretown is eight though and this age does have a good recent record – with last year’s winner Kandoo Kid also eight.
While 50% of the last ten successful horses here aged EIGHT.
Horses With Two-Five Chase Wins Have A Good Record
The next Coral Gold Cup trend in Myretown’s favour is horses with between two and five chase wins have a good record.
In the last 23 runnings, a massive 87% fell into this Coral Gold Cup stat.
And so does Myretown, having won three times over the bigger obstacles (from five starts).
With his last win, his eleven-length success in the Ultima Handicap at the Cheltenham Festival (see below).
He’s up 15lbs for that win.
But if Russell is saying he’s one of the best she’s had – even a mark of 142 now would surely make him very well-handicapped.
Based on her 2023 Grand National winner Corach Rambler being rated 162 at his peak and 146 when he won at Aintree.
Look For A Top Three Finish Last Time Out
Coming into the race off the back of a good run has been another positive.
Backed up with 16 of the last 23 winners finishing in the top three in their last outing.
Again, several of the main players fit the bill here, but a few of the more fancied ones don’t.
Most notably Hyland, who was 9th last time and Katate Dori, who was 7th.
Having Raced At Newbury Before Is A Plus
Course experience at the Berkshire track has helped too, with 16 of the last 23 winners (70%) having run at Newbury in the past.
Of these 16 winners, ten had also won here over fences too.
Okay, Myretown hasn’t won at Newbury – but he did run fifth in a Novices’ Handicap Chase at this meeting last season.
Plus, in contrast, one of his big rivals in the betting Resplendent Grey is yet to race at Newbury.
52% Of The Last 23 Winners Ran At Aintree or Cheltenham Last Time Out
Next is to respect horses that raced at either Aintree or Cheltenham last time.
The Coral Gold Cup trends tell us that 12 of the last 23 winners ran at one of these premier tracks in their most recent outing.
Five at Aintree and seven at Cheltenham, where Myretown was last in action.
Coral Gold Cup Favourites Have A Fair Record
Then finally, despite this Newbury race being one of the most competitive handicaps on the jump calendar – it’s not been a bad contest for the market leader.
We’ve seen seven winning favourites in the last 23 runnings (30%) – with the most recent Le Milos in 2022 (9/2 fav).
In the last nine runnings, Native River (2016) and Total Recall (2017) also rewarded favourite backers.
Despite Cloudy Glen winning at 33/1 in 2021 – 13 of the last 16 winners also returned 12/1 or shorter in the betting.
At this stage, Myretown is disputing the Coral Gold Cup favourites berth at 5/1 with the Olly Murphy-trained Resplendent Grey next best.
Are There Any NEGATIVE Stats For Myretown?
Then, in contrast to the six positive Coral Gold Cup trends, those looking elsewhere for the winner might cling to this stat.
15 of the last 23 winners had a previous race that season.
As we know, Myretown is back from a 263 break, so would fall down in this trend.
This equates to a 65% return in favour of horses that are fit from a run already that season.
But anyone looking to kick this stat into touch, will say last year’s winner Kandoo Kid won off a break.
As did the 2021 winner Cloudy Glen.
So, there are many pointers, stats and trends that will back up the chances of some horses and others that suggest they won’t win.
Therefore, you have to pick your battles when it comes to looking at past history.
