A field of nine Cox Plate runners will head to post on Saturday 26th October for the 2024 renewal of the famous Moonee Valley race – which carries a purse of A$5m and is often seen as a good guide towards the Melbourne Cup in early November.
Japanese Entry Prognosis Heads The Cox Plate Runners 2024
According to the best horse racing betting sites in the UK, the raider from Japan Prognosis will be trying to create a bit of history and follow Lys Gracieux, who won the race in 2019, as the latest Far East runner to land the Moonee Valley race.
Prognosis will head into the Cox Plate off the back of a fine fourth in the Sapporo Kinen behind North Bridge in the middle of August – while prior to that was a neck second to last year’s Cox Plate winner Romantic Warrior in the Grade One QE II Cup at Sha Tin, Hong Kong.
In 2023, Prognosis also ran the classy Equinox, who was billed as one of the best racehorses on the planet at the time, to 3 3/4 lengths in the G1 Tenno Sho.
Prognosis will also be looking to become the third winning Cox Plate favourite in the last three runnings – with Anamoe and Romantic Warrior winning the last two as market leaders.
The Cox Plate has also produced seven winning favourites in the last nine renewals.

Via Sistina is another name that will leap off the page as this 6 year-old mare used to be with the George Boughey yard in Newmarket and ran second behind King Of Steel in the King Edward VII Stakes at Royal Ascot in 2023.
Now with Chris Waller Down Under, the horse was last seen winning the G1 Turnbull Stakes at Flemington and will be another of the leading fancies to add the Cox Plate to his CV.
We will also see another past Royal Ascot performer in the race as UK trainer Harry Eustace sends over his 2023 Britannia Stakes winner Docklands. He was also runner-up this season to last weekend’s QEII Stakes winner on Champions Day Charyn in the Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot.
