Sportscasting’s Team Of The Week from EFL Cup Round of 16

The Round of 16 of the 2025/26 Carabao Cup brought thrills, spills, shocks, and surprises. SportsCasting honours the standout players by inducting them into the EFL Cup Team of the Week.

Liverpool grabbed the headlines on Wednesday, but not for the right reasons. The Reds lost 3-0 to Crystal Palace in Round 4 of the Carabao Cup, extending their losing streak to five games in domestic competitions.

Coach Arne Slot suggested Liverpool’s lack of squad depth contributed to their EFL Cup exit, which has drawn criticism from fans on social media.

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca also had a scare in the Carabao Cup as Wolverhampton Wanderers pulled two goals back to make it 3-2 in the second half. The game ultimately ended 4-3 in the Blues’ favour, as both sides scored a goal each at the death.

Arsenal, Manchester City, and Brentford picked up straightforward wins. Newcastle United beat Tottenham Hotspur 2-0. Cardiff City beat Wrexham 2-1. And Fulham survived their penalty shootout (1-1) against Wycombe Wanderers.

In the next round, Arsenal will host Crustal Palace, Cardiff City will welcome Chelsea, Brentford will go to Manchester City, and Fulham will take on Newcastle United at St. James’ Park.

The centre-back scored a superb header in the 24th minute, steering Sandro Tonali’s corner into the bottom-left corner. The early goal set the tone for the rest of the match.

He also played nine passes into the final third, delivered nine accurate long balls, and won six of seven aerial duels.

Midfield

Rayan Cherki (Manchester City)

After finding the woodwork in the first half, Cherki took control of the midfield in the second 45. He assisted Omar Marmoush with a perfectly weighted pass in 77th minute. Cherki got his goal in injury time after Josko Gvardiol played him into space 15 yards away from goal.

The Frenchman also created six chances and won five duels against Swansea on Wednesday night.

Sandro Tonali (Newcastle United)

Throughout the 90, Tonali completed 51 passes with 91% accuracy, had seven defensive contributions, delivered three accurate crosses, and won four duels.

Mathias Jensen (Brentford)

Sitting at the base of the midfield, Jensen controlled the tempo of the game, never allowing Grimsby Town to get a foothold. He set the tone by scoring spectacularly from outside the box in the 22nd minute and added an assist to his tally in the 75th minute.

The Danish midfielder created three chances, made 10 recoveries, and won four of five duels.

Jamie Gittens (Chelsea)

Jamie Gittens was the standout performer as Chelsea beat Wolverhampton Wanderers 4-3 in the EFL Cup Round of 16 on Wednesday night. He scored one goal and provided two assists as the Blues secured a narrow win.

The England star showed strength and awareness to hold off Wolves defenders before sending Andrey Santos through on goal in the fifth minute. Gittens got his second assist ten minutes later, bursting into the box from the left and rolling it for Tarique George to tap in.

Gittens got on the scoresheet in the 89th minute. The summer signing got on the ball after Wolves lost possession from a throw in and then found the back of the net with a first-time effort from outside the box.
