Team Europe aim to retain the Ryder Cup as they travel to Bethpage Black in New York  for this year’s biennial event. But how successful have Europe been on US soil over the years?

Read on to find out everything you need to know about Team Europe’s Ryder Cup record when playing away from home in American.

Europe Ryder Cup Record In America

The first ever Ryder Cup was played almost a century ago in 1927, with USA defeating Great Britain at Worcester Country Club in Massachusetts.

That was the first ever Ryder Cup, before it became a USA vs Great Britain & Ireland competition from 1973-1977. From 1979 until the present day, it has been America vs Europe.

As is tradition, the biennial event is playing in American one year, then two years later it is played in Europe. Two years ago, it was Team Europe who won on home soil at Marco Simone in Rome back in 2023.

That means that Luke Donald’s European side now face a trip across the pond to American this time around in 2025. This begs the question, what is Europe’s Ryder Cup record when playing away from home in the US?

Europe are underdogs with golf betting sites to win the Ryder Cup this year at Bethpage Black. Although they dominated the event two years ago, the Americans have been incredibly strong on home soil of late.

Of the previous 44 Ryder Cup’s, 22 have been played on US soil with the other 22 on Great British, Irish and European soil.

With the Ryder Cup becoming a USA vs Europe event from 1979 onwards, this means that there have been 11 Ryder Cup’s in America in which Europe have competed.

Of these 11 Ryder Cup’s in America against Europe, the US have won seven with Europe winning the other four. This isn’t a bad record at all for the Europeans, who have won more on US soil than America have on European soil since 1979.

In fact, since the Ryder Cup became a Europe vs America event 46 years ago, the Europeans have won double the amount of times on away soil than their US counterparts.

Europe Last Won The Ryder Cup On US Soil In 2012

So, when did Europe last win the Ryder Cup in America?

The last time a European side triumphed on US soil was back in 2012 – 13 years ago. Labelled the ‘Miracle at Medinah’, Europe trailed 10-6 going into Sunday’s final day, with America just needing 4.5 points to win the Ryder Cup from the 12 singles matches.

In what has been labelled one of the greatest sporting comebacks of all time, Europe secured 8.5 points from a possible 12, meaning they won the Ryder Cup outright and competed an unthinkable comeback.

This was in fact the last time Europe won the Ryder Cup on US soil. Jose Maria Olazabel’s side made history that day, with Luke Donald hoping to replicate that famous European win on American soil this year at Bethpage Black.

Since their last win in America, Europe haven’t really competed when facing the US away from home. In the two Ryder Cup’s since on US soil, the Americans won convincingly 17-11 and 19-9 respectively.

With the likes of Rory McIlroy and Justin Rose boasting the best Ryder Cup record for Team Europe, could they help the Blue and Gold secure a famous away win in New York? Not long until we find out!
