Everton Liverpool

Monday’s win at Old Trafford saw Everton climb above their rivals in the Premier League table, with David Moyes hoping to be the first Toffees boss to finish above Liverpool since he himself managed it 12 years ago.

David Moyes’ Everton held on for a shock win at Manchester United, despite being reduced to 10 men early on in bizarre circumstances.

Idrissa Gueye was shown a straight red after just 13 minutes for striking teammate Michael Keane in the face.

Following an altercation between the pair, Gueye appeared to slap Keane, prompting the referee to dismiss him for violent conduct.

But the visitors grabbed the lead through Kieran Dewsbury-Hall, who cut in from the edge of the box and curled a spectacular effort in to the top corner.

Everton’s Monday Night Football record was far better than United’s heading into the match, and so it proved once more as the Toffees hung on for victory.

The win was only their second at Old Trafford since 1992, and David Moyes’ first as an opposition manager.

As well as this, victory has seen Everton climb above rivals Liverpool in the Premier League table.

But when did the Toffees last finish above Liverpool, and will they manage it this season?

When Did Everton Last Finish Above Liverpool?

It’s been 12 years since Everton last finished above Liverpool in the Premier League.

In the 2012-13 season, during David Moyes’ first spell in charge, Everton achieved a sixth-placed finish.

Liverpool, meanwhile, finished seventh, two points below their neighbours.

This was an especially significant achievement for the Toffees, who finished above Liverpool in successive seasons for the first time since the 1930s.

But with Liverpool’s title defence this season the worst ever after 12 games, Everton fans sense an opportunity.

Finishing above the Reds is a rare thing for the Toffees, but just how rare?

How Often Have Everton Finished Higher Than Liverpool?

Since the inception of the Premier League in 1992, Everton have finished above Liverpool just three times.

As mentioned, the Toffees reigned supreme over their rivals in 2011-12 and 2012-13.

But they also finished above the Reds in 2004-05, despite Liverpool lifting the Champions League that season in the miracle of Istanbul.

Overall, Liverpool have been the dominant force in this long-established rivalry, though.

They have finished higher than Everton 63 times in the post World War II era, compared with 16 times Everton have ended the season on top.

Who Will Finish Higher This Season?

While the table and form guides both favour Everton, Liverpool are still expected to finish on top.

Most betting sites are giving odds of around 9/1 for the Toffees to finish above their rivals.

But those odds would have been far longer at the start of the season.

Ahead of the campaign, Opta ran 10,000 simulations of the Premier League.

In those simulations, Liverpool averaged 73.2 points, while Everton managed 48.5.

Few expect Liverpool’s dreadful form to continue forever, meaning Everton finishing higher remains an outside bet.

Nevertheless, Toffees fans will enjoy seeing their side on top for now, and they may yet still be there in May.
