Premier League champions Liverpool and FA Cup winners Crystal Palace kick off the 2025/26 season in the Community Shield this Sunday.
Having won their first major trophy last season, Crystal Palace will play for the trophy for the first time in their history.
Liverpool, meanwhile, are a lot more experienced, lifting the Shield 16 times in total. They have secured the title with outright wins on 11 occasions and shared the title five times.
With both sides putting the final touches on their season preparations, Community Shield stats suggest that the game may need more than 90 minutes to be decided.

Does the FA Community Shield Go to Extra Time?
Held the weekend before the new Premier League season gets underway, the FA Community Shield is the curtain raiser of football in the country.
However, the FA still classifies the Community Shield as a friendly. And as is the norm with most friendlies across the world, there is no extra time in the FA Community Shield. If Liverpool and Crystal Palace are level at the end of 90 minutes, the match will go straight to penalties.
Liverpool are 8/13 with UK betting sites to claim the win at Wembley Stadium inside 90 minutes.
Replays to Penalties – Changes in Community Shield Rules
The first FA Community Shield was contested between Manchester United and Queens Park Rangers in 1908. The game ended 1-1 at Stamford Bridge, prompting a rematch days later. In the rematch, Man Utd came out on top, securing a 4-0 win, and claiming the trophy.

For the following 40 years, no Community Shield game ended in a draw after 90 minutes. In 1949, English champions Portsmouth and FA Cup winners Wolverhampton Wanderers played out a 1-1 draw in the Community Shield final. Instead of a replay, the Shield was shared between the two teams, with each team keeping it for six months.
There were 10 more occasions of teams sharing honours before penalties were chosen as the method of resolution.
Five of the Last Eight Community Shield Matches Went to Penalties
In the FA Community Shield history, 12 games have been settled on penalties. Interestingly, five of those have come in the last eight years. Manchester United (1993, 1997, 2003, 2007, 2008), Arsenal (2017, 2020, 2023), Manchester City (2019, 2024), and Liverpool (1974) have held their nerves in shootouts.
Man City were the last team to win the FA Community Shield on penalties. They beat crosstown rivals Man Utd 7-6 on penalties last year after the pair played out a 1-1 draw.
Refer to the table below to check out the last five Community Shield clashes that were decided on penalties.
