Giorgio Scalvini, Pictured in Action for Atalanta, Is Linked With Newcastle United

Premier League giants Newcastle United have reportedly once again set their sights on Atalanta youngster Giorgio Scalvini.

The Magpies were strongly linked with Scalvini in 2024, after Sven Botman suffered an anterior cruciate ligament tear. Manchester United were also reportedly interested in signing Scalvini.

Italian media linked Newcastle United with Scalvini in 2023, as well. They were reportedly among multiple European heavyweights, including Chelsea, Atletico Madrid, and Manchester City, eyeing a move for him.

Alongside Newcastle United, Serie A holders Napoli are also keeping tabs on 21-year-old Scalvini this summer. Their interest has yet to materialise into something tangible.

Newcastle United Rekindle Interest in Atalanta Starlet Giorgio Scalvini

According to Italian journalist Matteo Moretto, Atalanta defender Giorgio Scalvini is one of the top names on Newcastle United’s summer wishlist. After the move fizzled out in previous seasons, Newcastle could finally table a concrete offer this time around.

As per Moretto, the Magpies have been closely monitoring Scalvini’s progress at Atalanta. They are convinced he would be a valuable addition to their squad, as they prepare for another season in the Champions League. They are studying the possibility of presenting an offer to Atalanta and the player’s representatives in the coming days. Newcastle United are also linked with Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford, as they aim to form a more solid defensive core.

Earlier this year, Newcastle United were rumoured to be interested in Atalanta forward Ademola Lookman. The Magpies never placed a formal bid for the player.

Giorgio Scalvini Transfer Cost

Matteo Moretto has not mentioned how much Giorgio Scalvini could cost this summer. But based on previous reports, it is safe to say he will not come cheap.

In 2023, long before he had established himself in Europe, the Italian media reported a potential £35 million transfer fee. Last summer, the reported transfer fee rose to €50 million (£43 million). According to Transfermarkt, Scalvini’s market value in June 2025 is approximately €35 million (£30 million).

Although there is plenty of interest in Giorgio Scalvini, Atlanta will have the last say in the matter. And as things stand, they are not interested in selling the young centre-back this summer. According to the journalist, they intend to keep him for at least one more year. La Dea are prepared to do all in their power to convince him to continue at the club.

Scalvini’s contract with the Magpies runs out in June 2028.

Who is Giorgio Scalvini?

Born in Chiari in 2003, Giorgio Scalvini has emerged as one of the most highly rated young defenders in Italy. At 1.94 meters, he is a towering presence in the box, handles pressure considerably well, and is a versatile passer. His tackling is crisp, and he places himself in all the right areas.

The youngster’s skillset also allows him to operate in a No. 6 role. He earned high praise for his performance as a defensive midfielder against Inter Milan in the semi-final of the 2025 Supercoppa Italiana. Scalvini is still only developing and is only likely to get better with regular playtime.

Scalvini joined Atalanta Youth from Brescia Youth in July 2015. Rising through the ranks, he officially got his shot with the senior team in 2021. Since earning his professional contract, he has played 107 games for the club in all competitions, scoring 5 goals and claiming 5 assists. Scalvini, who has played eight matches for Italy, won the Europa League with Atalanta in 2023/24.
