JJ Spaun is officially the 125th US Open champion after sinking a 65-foot monster putt on the 18th hole to claim victory by two shots at Oakmont Country Club. The final round was wet, windy and wild, with the American sealing the deal to claim his first major championship success in one of the toughest US Open’s in the past decade. JJ Spaun Wins 125th US Open At Oakmont With Dramatic Birdie On Final Hole JJ Spaun claimed his first major championship victory with a dramatic finish to be crowned the 125th US Open champion at Oakmont Country Club. The American was at the top of the leaderboard from the very first round on Thursday, finishing his tournament in style with a 65-foot monster putt to win this year’s US Open. It’s fair to say the opening nine holes of Spaun’s final round didn’t exactly go to plan on Sunday. The 34-year-old bogeyed five of the first six holes, going from -3 to +2 and seemingly falling out of contention. However, Spaun regrouped magnificently on the back nine, with four birdies in the last seven holes to clinch victory around the incredibly tough Oakmont. To cap it all off, Spaun holed an incredible 65-foot putt on the 18th hole to win the 125th US Open by two shots to Scotland’s Robert MacIntyre. This 65-foot birdie putt means that Spaun became only the second player to finish with two birdies to win a US Open at Oakmont. The other was the great Ben Hogan at the 1953 US Open over 70 years ago. Spaun’s victory means he is now the last US Open winner at Oakmont since Dustin Johnson’s triumph back in 2016. WATCH: JJ Spaun Sinks 65-Foot Birdie Putt On 18 To Claim US Open Victory Will JJ Spaun Represent Team USA At The 2025 Ryder Cup After US Open Win? Following his dramatic victory at the 125th US Open, it seems that JJ Spaun has all but booked his place on Keegan Bradley’s 2025 Ryder Cup team this September. Winning one of the four majors almost guarantees this. Not to mention the fact that Spaun has had a quality season so far, also coming close to winning The Players Championship back in March but ultimately losing out in a playoff to world number one Scottie Scheffler. The 34-year-old has now risen to eight in the Official World Golf Rankings, as well as shooting up to sixth in the current FedEx Cup standings. Oakmont, which boasts the longest par-3 is US Open history, is a true test of golf, with Spaun showing that he is more than capable of competing at the highest level on one of the toughest courses in the world. Bethpage Black in New York is another huge test, where the 2025 Ryder Cup is being played in September. After his display at the 2025 US Open at Oakmont, you can almost guarantee that JJ Spaun will be on Team USA at the Ryder Cup. Fellow Golfers React To JJ Spaun’s 65-Foot Putt To Win US Open Bryson DeChambeau was aiming to become a back-to-back US Open winner at Oakmont last week, but he missed the cut meaning that Brooks Koepka’s record of the last back-to-back US Open winner remains in tact. DeChambeau and Koepka were just two of JJ Spaun’s fellow professionals to congratulate him on his maiden major championship success. A whole host of Spaun’s fellow PGA Tour and LIV Golf professionals also congratulated him in person, as well as in interview and on social media. Robert MacIntyre, who finished solo second, two shots behind Spaun on +1, was seen applauding the American after he holed his dramatic 65-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole. The Scotsman also visibly shouted ‘wow’ when Spaun sank his birdie putt on the final hole of the 2025 US Open to clinch victory. Justin Thomas was another fellow professional to congratulate Spaun on his first major success, taking to social media to do so. A microphone on the 18th hole also picked up Viktor Hovland saying “that was impressive dude, congrats” after Spaun holed his birdie putt. He also did a post-round interview describing Spaun’s finish as ‘absolutely filthy’. Tyrrell Hatton was giving an interview after his round when Spaun holed the winning putt, and his reaction showed pure elation for his counterpart. "Wow."
