Stamina will be the order of the day in the feature race at Newcastle this Saturday – so to help narrow down the field Andy Newton is back with his key Eider Chase trends for 2025 – a race which is run over a gruelling 4m 1 1/2f, Then, once the final Eider Chase runners are out, you can apply these trends to the field – putting history on your side and highlighting the horses with the best profiles based on past winners. Now aged 10, Anglers Crag is rated 8lbs higher than last year and also hasn’t won a race since (4 runs), so will need to bounce back. On a plus, despite his age, he’s fairly lightly-raced with just 12 runs over fences (4 wins) and should strip fitter for a recent 4th in the Edinburgh National at Musselburgh earlier this month. Anglers Crag, however, will also be looking to become the first Eider Chase back-to-back winner since a horse called Highland Wedding won the race three times between 1966 and 1969 – with the 1968 running called off due to snow. Last year’s Eider Chase second Prince Des Fichaux, the fourth Gold Clermont. While Major Dundee also ran in the race 12 months ago – he was still in with a shout until unseating two fences from home. Brian Ellison certainly loves a winner at Newcastle! ❤️ Anglers Crag provided him with a thrilling win in the Eider Chase! pic.twitter.com/6O732ZDo6H — ITV Racing (@itvracing) February 25, 2024 Eider Chase Runners 2025 (Age in brackets) Collectors Item (8) Iron Bridge (9) O’Connell (9) Egbert (8) History Of Fashion (11) Anglers Crag (10) Ilikedwayurthinkin (11) Passing Well (8) Major Dundee (10) Undersupervision (9) Gaboriot (9) Your Own Story (9) Bretney (10) Choosethenews (8) Bodhisattva (8) Sporting Ace (9) Jacks Parrot (6) Knockanore (8) Chemical Warfare (8) Lord Roco (9) Gold Clermont (9) Prince Des Fichaux (8) Which Horses Tick The Most Eider Chase Trends 2025? The main Eider Chase trends look to be distance (won over at least 3m), age (10 or younger), weight (10-13 or more), recent run (top 4 last time and ran in the last 6 weeks) and the market (top 3 in the betting). With this in mind, at this stage Collectors Item and O’Connell, who both come here in winning form, look to tick a lot of the stats. The 8 year-old Collectors Item was second in the London National at Sandown over 3m 4 1/2f back in December, so we knwo he stays. He’s since backed that up with a smooth win at Wincanton. The Jonjo and AJ O’Neill-trained horse is also up just 4lbs more here and with just nine career chase starts could have more improvement to come. O’Connell is in tip-top form too, having won his last three. This 9 year-old was last in action wining at Sandown at the start of the month by a comfortable 2 3/4 lengths and won over 3m 3 1/2f at Market Rasen the time before so is another with assured stamina. The 8lb hike in the ratings makes like harder for O’Connell this time, but the way he won last time suggests he could still have more to come over this extreme trip. Eider Chase Winners Since 2014 2024 – ANGLERS CRAG (11/2) 2023 – KITTY’S LIGHT (7/4 fav) 2022 – WIN MY WINGS (11/2 fav) 2021 – SAMS ADVENTURE (15/2) 2020 – No Race 2019 – CROSSPARK (12/1) 2018 – BAYWING (8/1) 2017 – MYSTEREE (10/1) 2016 – ROCKING BLUES (8/1) 2015 – MILBOROUGH (18/1) 2014 – WYCK HILL (9/1) Written by Sports EditorAndy Newton Andy is a horse racing journalist and betting expert who specializes in trends and stats.
