Kylian Mbappe hospital

Real Madrid star Kylian Mbappe is in hospital with gastroenteritis, his club have confirmed.

Mbappe, 26, missed Real’s 1-1 Club World Cup opener with Saudi side Al-Hilal on Wednesday.

At the time, his absence was put down to simply ‘illness’, but on Thursday, it was confirmed he is suffering from gastroenteritis.

With the severity of the Frenchman’s illness now revealed, it seems highly unlikely he will be available for Real’s next game on Sunday.

Mbappe scored a hat-trick for Real Madrid against Manchester City in February, and has been a key player since joining from Paris Saint-Germain.

Real Madrid Star Kylian Mbappe In Hospital

Kylian Mbappe is in hospital with what his club have called ‘acute gastroenteritis’.

He has been hospitalised to undergo ‘various tests and treatment’.

Although not usually serious in healthy people, such as elite footballers, severe symptoms can be a cause for concern.

Why Is Mbappe In Hospital?

Gastroenteritis symptoms include severe vomiting and diarrhoea.

With more extreme cases, medical treatment may be needed to control these symptoms.

On top of this, a hospital visit may be recommended to rule out any more serious concerns.

Due to the nature of the symptoms, dehydration can be a risk and must be monitored.

What Is Gastroenteritis?

Gastroenteritis is an inflammation of the stomach lining and intestines.

As mentioned, the main symptoms are vomiting and diarrhoea.

The most common form is viral gastroenteritis. This can be caused by numerous viruses, such as noroviruses and rotaviruses.

Some refer to viral gastroenteritis as ‘stomach flu’, though this is not medically accurate as it is not caused by flu viruses.

If caused by consuming contaminated foods or drinks, gastroenteritis is refereed to as ‘food poisoning’.

Infections can be spread from person to person via contact, such as when people tough their eyes, mouth or nose.

Treatments can include antibiotics, fluids and anti-nausea medication.

While not always possible to prevent gastroenteritis, risks can be reduced with proper hand washing, safe food preparation and regularly cleaning surfaces.

Real Madrid Fixtures For Club World Cup

The opening draw with Al-Hilal was also former Liverpool star Trent Alexander-Arnold’s Real Madrid debut, which left much to be desired.

With one game played in Group H, Real’s remaining fixtures look like this.

They take on Mexican outfit Pachuca on 22 June, before their final group game against Red Bull Salzburg on 27 June.

Real Madrid’s fixtures will look like this, if they make it through the knockouts:
