Liverpool are considering a move for Atalanta midfielder Ederson as they look to rescue their spiralling season.
It’s been a season to forget so far for the defending Premier League champions.
Having spent £450 million in the summer on new arrivals, including British record signings Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak, the Reds look a weaker team than they were last year.
A glaring omission from their incomings, though, was a top-level midfielder.
The club instead opted to allow Harvey Elliott and James McConnell to depart on loan, with Tyler Morton joining Lyon.
Arne Slot’s lack of depth in this department has since been badly exposed.
Injuries to regular starters Alexis Mac Allister and Ryan Gravenberch have caused problems.
And a crisis at right-back has led to star man Dominik Szoboszlai being deployed in all manner of unfavoured positions.
Despite some positive Liverpool injury news this week, with Conor Bradley and Jeremie Frimpong nearing returns, it’s become clear that a midfield addition is hugely important.
And Atalanta’s Ederson has emerged as a leading candidate ahead of the window.
🇧🇷 One thing I like about Ederson is that he covers a lot of ground.
Last season he averaged the most distances (12.2km per 90) for Atalanta in the Champions League.
He’s also relatively quick for a midfielder.
His top speed over the last two #UCL seasons is 34.7km/h.… pic.twitter.com/iJG7VxxKMI

Liverpool Eyeing Ederson Move
According to a report from Italian publication Calcio Mercato, Ederson is now a priority signing for Liverpool.
The Brazilian tormented the Reds in the 2024 Europa League, bossing the midfield in a 3-0 win that helped Atalanta on their way to winning the competition.
But despite a move looking likely, the 26-year-old remained with the Serie A side.
With his contract running until 2027 and no sign of a new deal being agreed, Atalanta are open to reduced bids in order to prevent losing their man for free at the end of next season.
The player’s agent, Andre Cury, explained: “Atalanta were asking for a lot of money, between 60 and 75 million euros, but now his contract is almost up, they could even halve the price, between 30 and 40 million,” he said.
“He’s a spectacular player with some of the best statistics in Europe for his position.”
That lower fee would allow Liverpool to make a move in January, without having to worry about another extreme spend.
Barcelona Could Hijack Any Liverpool Deal
But there is one potential complication for the Reds.
Barcelona are said to hold an interest in Ederson, with the Spanish Giants said to be long-term admirers.

The lack of financial certainty at the Catalan club could prevent a move in the upcoming window, though.
As a result, Liverpool remain in the driving seat.
Arne Slot will no doubt be keen to bring in an adaptable and technically gifted player who can add depth and competition through the middle of the park.
What Would Ederson Bring To Liverpool?
Renowned for his work-rate, physicality and ball carrying, Ederson fits the Liverpool mould perfectly.
And with a price range though to be from £25-£25 million, he would represent great value.
On-loan duo Elliott and McConnell are by no means certain to remain at the club next season.
And with Waturo Endo not getting any younger, Ederson could be the ideal solution.
There is no guarantee this deal will happen, but it is one that would make sense for all parties.
If Liverpool can secure their man for as little as has been suggested, this one feels like a no-brainer.
