The dust will be settling on the Cheltenham Festival, but the horse racing calendar continues at Uttoxeter with the Midlands Grand National the big Saturday race – so to help Andy Newton is back with his key Midlands Grand National trends and stats to help whittle down the runners.

86% Of The Last 21 Winners Carried 10st 12lbs Or Less in Weight

Being a handicap that is run over 4m 2f, then weight carried is the first Midlands Grand National trend to have on your radar.

This is because a massive 18 of the last 21 (86%) won carrying 10st 12lbs or less. Which means the top eleven on the card fall down on this stat – with these horses getting a thumbs up.

  • Knockanore (10-12)
  • Passing Well (10-11)
  • Ioupy Collonges (10-11)
  • My Silver Lining (10-9)
  • Bodhisattva (10-9)
  • Invincible Nao (10-8)

Four Of The Last 5 Midlands National Winners Were Aged 8

Next up is the age – and with 19 of the last 21 winners aged 9 or younger. But there have been two winners aged 11 since 2018.

However, there is only one horse aged 10 in the race – Anglers Crag.

The good news is that we can take this Midlands Grand National trend a bit further – as 80% of the last five winners were aged 8.

While 11 of the last 14 winners were aged either 8 or 9.

Here are the 2025 Midlands National runners aged 8 or 9.

  • Apple Away (8)
  • Bodhisattva (8)
  • Egbert (8)
  • Fortunedefortunata (8)
  • Knockanore (8)
  • Passing Well (8)
  • Saint Davy (8)
  • Val Dancer (8)
  • Galia Des Liteaux (9)
  • Iron Bridge (9)
  • Mr Vango (9)
  • My Silver Lining (9)
  • Where It All Began (9)

Just 3 Winning Midlands National Favourites In The Last 21 Runnings

The Midlands Grand National has also not been the best race for the market leaders – with only 14% of the last 21 favourites winning.

Time To Get Up in 2021 (3/1 fav) was the last winning Midlands Grand National favourite with the best horse racing betting sites in the UK – and the only jolly to go in over the last 10 years.

This year’s Midlands Grand National favourite is expected to be Mr Vango for trainer Sara Bradstock, with Knockanore and Apple Away next best – so keep an eye on the betting in the build-up to the race.
