Ahead of Sunday’s clash between Liverpool and Newcastle, we take a look back at the 12 sides who have the most League Cup wins in history.
Overall, 23 clubs have tasted glory in the 61 finals that have been played. Of those victors, 12 teams have won the competition multiple times.
Although the League Cup is not the most prestigious trophy on offer in English football, the finals themselves often deliver their fair share of thrills and spills.
Take Bradford City for example. Their run to Wembley in 2013 was epic in itself as they beat Premier League trio Wigan, Arsenal and Aston Villa to reach the home of English football.
However, they were truly humbled in the final. Nathan Dyer (2), Jonathan De Guzman (2) and Michu all netted in a 5-0 romp for Swansea.
Three years ago, Liverpool beat Chelsea 11-10 in a legendary penalty shootout under the guidance of Jurgen Klopp. Elsewhere, Man City won the competition four years in a row between 2018-2021.
In 2017, a double from Zlatan Ibrahimovic and a Jesse Lingard strike helped Man United beat Southampton in a five-goal thriller.
Now it’s the turn of Arne Slot’s side and the Magpies to serve up a treat this weekend. As it stands, the Merseysiders are the 6/11 favourites with the best football betting sites in the UK.
The Toon Army can be backed at 5/1 with the draw inside 90 minutes 7/2. Unsurprisingly, Mo Salah heads the first goalscorer market at 15/4.
Now, we wanted to take a look back at the ten sides who boast the most League Cup wins. Naturally, the list is dominated by English football’s biggest teams.
Most League Cup Wins
The side who can boast the most League Cup wins is Liverpool. The Reds have lifted the trophy on 10 separate occasions including in 2024. Interestingly, they are the first club to win the competition in four successive seasons.
Taking the runner-up spot in Man City. Six of their eight victories have come since 2014 and they too have also won the League Cup across four consecutive years.
Man United follow their city rivals and have six victories to their name. The Red Devils most recent came in 2023 when they beat Newcastle 2-0 at Wembley.
Unai Emery’s Aston Villa and Enzo Maresca’s Chelsea have five wins each. Tottenham and Nottingham Forest have four wins and the latter’s last major trophy success was in fact the League Cup in 2008.
Just below them are Leicester City. The Foxes have won the competition three times which included victories in 1997 and 2000.
A total of four sides have lifted the League Cup on two occasions. Arsenal, Norwich, Birmingham and Wolves are those in question.
11 teams have won it just once. The clubs to have done so are West Brom, Middlesbrough, QPR, Leeds, Stoke, Luton, Sheffield Wednesday, Swindon, Oxford, Blackburn and Swansea.
