‘Leave the Football Before Football Leaves You’ – Fans Feel Sorry for Neymar After Failed Double Rainbow Flick

Neymar’s unsuccessful double-rainbow flick has gone viral on social media, drawing widespread sympathy from fans.

Several fans showed concern on X (formerly Twitter) about the Brazilian’s career, fearing that his glory days are long behind him.

After stints at Barcelona, PSG, and Al-Hilal, Neymar has returned to his boyhood club Santos.

The initial hope and optimism surrounding his arrival have evaporated, leaving fans questioning the Brazilian’s ability and leadership.

On Sunday, Neymar put in a good shift as Santos beat Palmeiras 1-0 and climbed out of the relegation zone.

The 33-year-old tried to go past defenders with the help of his bag of tricks and was successful for the most part.

However, towards the end of the game, he had an embarrassing moment, as he failed to pull off two consecutive rainbow flicks in quick succession.

In May 2024, Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher used the phrase ‘leave the football before the football leaves you’ to analyse Casemiro’s performance.

His remarks gained fresh relevance this week after Neymar’s embarrassing rainbow-flick failures.

@Nekstylez posted Carragher’s GIF, with the quote

@SBT564 wrote on X (formerly Twitter):

He’s there but the spark just isn’t; tough to watch

@MLovenkrand added:

Mind and body aren’t working together anymore”

@Gyaksports thanked Neymar for his football but advised him to retire.

He should retire already. Thanks Ney, for giving us so much entertainment.

@ManChestraw1 said Neymar lost his relevance due to a lack of discipline.

If he had 25% of Ronaldo’s discipline, Raphinha would have been on the bench.

Neymar Has Had an Underwhelming Spell for Santos

Neymar earned a whopping €150 million (~£132 million) in wages in 2024 despite playing only two matches for Al-Hilal. With his fitness still a concern, the Saudi Arabian club released him in January 2025.

The former Barcelona forward joined his boyhood club Santos in a sensational free transfer.

With a player of Neymar’s stature in the ranks, fans expected fireworks. However, his performances for Santos have been underwhelming at best.

Since joining, Neymar has played 16 games in the Brazilian top flight, scoring only three goals. He has missed 16 games due to injuries (14) and suspension (12). Neymar’s last goal for Santos came in August.

With the 2026 World Cup just around the corner, Brazil manager Carlo Ancelotti has issued Neymar an ultimatum.

The Italian manager has challenged him to impress in the next six months or risk being left out of Brazil’s World Cup squad.
