Following last week’s win over Slovakia, Northern Ireland have a gilt-edged opportunity to take the lead in Group A when they host Germany on Monday night.
Group A is evenly poised, with Germany, Northern Ireland, and Slovakia all level on six points. Luxembourg are in fourth place, having lost all three matches.
Northern Ireland Meet Germany in Crucial World Cup Qualifier
Michael O’Neill’s Northern Ireland began their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign on a high, beating Luxembourg 3-1 away from home.
Jamie Reid, Shea Charles, and Justin Devenny scored a goal each for Northern Ireland while Aiman Dardari scored Luxembourg’s consolation. Northern Ireland could have had a bigger win had Isaac Price not missed from the penalty spot in the first half.
On Matchday 2, Northern Ireland suffered a 3-1 defeat to Julian Nagelsmann’s Germany. Price scored in the 34th minute to cancel out Serge Gnabry’s opener in the seventh minute. Unfortunately for the visitors, things only went downhill from there.
In the second half, Germany took control of the game, dominating possession and scoring two goals in quick succession in the 69th and 72nd minutes. Nadiem Amiri scored the first before Florian Wirtz bagged a free-kick to kill the game.
Germany are getting going in World Cup qualifying but tonight’s win for Northern Ireland means this group is shaping up nicely.

On Matchday 3, Northern Ireland faced Slovakia, and the outcome pleasantly surprised Irish supporters. David Strelec’s first-half own goal gave Northern Ireland the lead. Then in the 81st minute, Trai Hume dispatched a clinical shot from outside the box to make it 2-0.
While Northern Ireland registered a straightforward win over the Slovaks, Germany lost 2-0 to them on Matchday 1. Luckily for Nagelsmann, his team bounced back, picking up successive wins over Northern Ireland (3-1) and Luxembourg.
Germany made the most of their home advantage in the victory over Northern Ireland the last time out. In Belfast, they are likely to face a stiffer challenge.
Northern Ireland vs Germany Betting Tips

Germany to Win
Four-time World Cup winners Germany failed to live up to their lofty standards in their first qualifying fixture against Slovakia. The Slovaks hurt them with their pace and came away with a 2-0 victory.
However, since the shock defeat, Germany have bounced back, beating Northern Ireland and Luxembourg in consecutive matches. They scored seven goals in the two games, conceding just one.

In all competitions, Germany and Northern Ireland have met 20 times. Die Mannschaft have won 14 games, drawn four, and lost only two times against their Monday’s opponents.
Both Teams to Score: Yes
Germany have shown flashes of brilliance under new manager Julian Nagelsmann, but they have yet to attain consistency. On Monday, they will be without first-choice centre-back Antonio Rudiger, while Nico Schlotterbeck is also a doubt in defence.
Germany have kept a clean sheet in just one of their last eight matches, and we do not expect them to keep Northern Ireland at bay.
The hosts also have a poor defensive record, as they have kept just one clean sheet in their last matches. With the amount of attacking talent Germany possess, it will be a big upset if the visitors fail to score.
Florian Wirtz to Score or Assist
Florian Wirtz has yet to score or assist since his switch to Liverpool, leading to relentless criticism. Owing to his poor run of form, he has once again seen his value decrease in FPL price changes for Matchday 8. Having started the season at £8.5 million, the German is now worth £8.1 million.
Fortunately for him, his Liverpool struggles have not carried over to international football. He has scored three goals in his last five matches for Germany, including a sensational direct free-kick against Northern Ireland in their last meeting in September.
