Premier League summer transfer window

The Premier League has revealed that there will be two separate summer transfer windows in 2025, and here SportsCasting takes a look at when they start and end.

It was agreed at a shareholders meeting involving club owners and executives in London on Thursday morning.

There will be a short early window which starts at the beginning of June. This is due to an exceptional registration period for the expanded Club World Cup.

This will give Chelsea and Manchester City the chance to sign players before they take part in the expanded 32-team tournament.

The summer transfer window will close for six days before it reopens again for the majority of the summer until after the Premier League season gets underway.

How Long Is The First Summer Transfer Window?

The first summer transfer window will last for 10 days between Sunday, June 1 and Tuesday, June 10.

In a statement, the top flight said: “Premier League clubs have today agreed the dates for the Summer 2025 Transfer Window.

‘The window will open early, between Sunday 1 June and Tuesday 10 June, due to an exceptional registration period relating to the FIFA Club World Cup.”

The revamped Club World Cup in the United States starts on June 15 with the final on July 13.

It is yet to be seen if the LaLiga transfer window will run similar dates. This is an important issue as Real Madrid want to sign Trent Alexander-Arnold in time to play at the Club World Cup.

However, the Liverpool star’s contract doesn’t expire until June 30.

When Does The Second Window Start And End?

The second transfer window will run from Monday, June 16 and end on Monday, September 1.

It means that the summer transfer window will close after the start of the 2025-26 Premier League season.

The 2025-26 campaign gets underway on Saturday, August 16 – more than two weeks before deadline day.

This is despite speculation that it was set to be closed before the season got underway.

Back in 2018 and 2019, the top flight window closed before the campaign got underway.

However, since 2020, the summer transfer window has ended after the Premier League season has started.

The 2024 summer transfer window ran from June 14 to August 30.

Why Is There Two Summer Transfer Windows?

There will be questions over why the summer transfer window has been split into two parts, rather than having it run from June 1 to September 1.

FIFA rules insisting that windows can only run for a maximum of 89 days.

Were they to run the transfer window in one chunk it would mean they would have to close the window earlier in late August. That would leave English clubs vulnerable to losing players to overseas leagues without being able to sign replacements until January.

In total, the two summer transfer windows in England will last a total of 87 days.
