Last Three Stewards’ Cup Winners Could Line-up Again in 2024
The Stewards’ Cup is a race that past winners and runners often return the following year and in 2024 we could be in the unique position of having the last four winners entered.
Aberama Gold (watch below) landed the spoils 12 months ago and would surely have another big chance rated 5lbs lower after dropping down the ratings again with a so-far winless 2024.
We could also see the 2021 and 2022 winner Commanche Falls back for more. This Michael Dods sprinter will be looking to become the first horse to win the Stewards’ Cup three times.
However, if he does run this 7Â year-old will be the top-weight off a mark of 110 as since winning this he’s progressed into a Group and Listed winner. This 110 rating is 7lbs higher than his 2022 win and 9lbs more than in 2021.
The other past Stewards’ Cup winner that may run once more is the 2020 hero Summerghand, who is still going strong at the age of 10. He’d need a few to drop out to get in the race, but if he does make the final line-up is rated 91 these days, which is a full 17lbs lower than his 2020 victory.
Providing he doesn’t race again before the Stewards’ Cup on Saturday 3rd August, this would also be his 100th career outing.
Stewards’ Cup Trends Suggest We Should Ignore Horses Aged 7+
The next Stewards’ Cup trend to look for is age as this race tends to go to a horse aged 6 or younger.
This is backed up with a massive 95% of the last 21 winners aged between 3-6 years-old, with the only winner aged 7+ being Lancealot Du Lac in 2017 for Frankie Dettori.
Prior to that, you have to go back to 1995 (Shikari’s Son, 8) to find the last older Stewards’ Cup winner.
The bad news here is that the three recent winners of this race mentioned already would ALL fall down on this age stat. With last year’s winner Aberama Gold and two-time winner Commanche Falls both 7, while Summerghand is aged 10.
Respect Horses That Have Raced At Least Three Times That Season
Another trend that has a 95% strike-rate is having had at least three runs already that season.
Yes, when the final 2024 Stewards’ Cup runners are out most will fit the bill here, but this is still a stat to have on your radar in case any lightly-raced horses this term turn up.
Favourites Have a Decent Stewards’ Cup Record
Last year the Stewards’ Cup saw 27 runners, so it is always a very competitive affair.
However, despite this it’s actually been a decent race for the favourites with 11 of the last 21 market leaders placed and six winning – giving the jollies a not-too-shabby 29% strike-rate over this period.
86% Of The Last Seven Winners Carried 9st 1lb Or More
Being a handicap then weight carried is another Stewards’ Cup trend to look for.
Last year’s winner Aberama Gold carried 8st 13lbs to victory, while six of the last 7 winners won with 9st 1lb or more.
This suggests this weight should be your cut off point again heading into the 2024 race.
79% Of The Last 21 Stewards’ Cup Winners Came From a Double-Figure Draw
With 25+ runners in the race, then, of course, there is always going to be more runners coming from a double-figure draw so this stat will be slightly skewed.
However, it’s still worth a mention as the race has produced 79% of winners from stalls 10+ in the last 21 runnings. Backed up again in 2023 with Aberama Gold winning from stall 15 and before that the winners hailing from stalls 19, 23 and 17.
The Hills, Charlton, O’Meara, Haggas and Dods Yards Have All Had Two Winners Each
Finally, the best trainers in the Stewards’ Cup in recent times have been William Haggas, Charles Hills, David O’Meara, Michael Dods and the Charlton team (Roger) – they’ve all fired in two winners each since 2003.
Of that bunch it’s the Hills, O’Meara and Dods stables who have dominated since 2015 – with their double victories all coming over this period.
