Levi Williams Charged With Murdering Man After Newmarket Pub Brawl

Apprentice jockey Levi William, who has been banned from race riding for drugs offences in the past, has been charged with murder after a fight outside the Golden Lion pub in Newmarket High Street.

The incident took place on Saturday 8th March 2025, which left a 71 year-old man in hospital – with Levi Williams (25) arrested at the time on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm.

The 71 year-old had remained in hospital, but police confirmed the man had died on Tuesday (18th March).

Williams had been bailed by police after the incident – but was later arrested on Tuesday 18th March and then charged with murder before the Ipswich Magistrates Court on Wednesday 19th March.

He’ll remain in custody and then appear on the Cambridge Crown Court on Thursday 20th March.

Suffolk Police Released a Statement Saying

“A 25-year-old man has been charged with murder, after a man who sustained serious injuries following an incident in Newmarket earlier this month died in hospital. Levi Williams, of Holland Park, Newmarket, has subsequently been charged with murder.

“A 23-year-old man, who was also arrested on suspicion of assault causing grievous bodily harm, and a 45-year-old man, who was arrested on suspicion of affray, both remain on police bail until June 5 and June 9 respectively.”

Jockey Levi Williams Was Suspended For 18 Months In 2023 After Positive Drugs Test

Williams was last in horse racing action on the track back in May 2023 – as he tested positive for cocaine when in action at Windsor earlier that month.

This was his second drugs offence – having also been charged back in 2021 when failing a test for cannabis and cocaine.

As a result, the rider, who rode most of the time for trainer Simon Dow, was given an 18-month suspension from the saddle by the disciplinary panel – this ended in November 2024.

In total, Levi Williams has ridden in 156 races in Britain and recorded 12 wins.
