Wolves Summer Target Emil Holm Is Breaking Serie A Records – From Defence

Premier League bottom side Wolverhampton Wanderers cannot keep a clean sheet or score enough goals. Yet one of their primary summer targets is breaking goal attribute records, despite playing in defence.

Wolves’ Summer Target Emil Holm Breaks Serie A Goal Contribution Record

On Sunday, Wolverhampton Wanderers’ summer target Emil Holm became the first-ever defender to score a goal or provide an assist in five consecutive matches since Opta started tracking data.

He assisted Jhon Lucumi for Bologna’s second goal in their surprise 2-0 win over Napoli. Holm delivered an inch-perfect into the six-yard box from the touchline, and Lucumi met it with a thumping header.

The Bologna right-back had a disappointing start to the season, as he missed the first four league games due to a thigh injury. Since returning to action in Serie A Gameweek 6, he has been one of Bologna’s standout players. In the five matches he has played, Holm has scored one goal and provided four assists.

He scored against Cagliari (2-0) and provided assists in the games against Lecce (2-2), Fiorentina (2-2), Parma (3-1), and Napoli (2-0).

After breaking the goal contribution record, Holm said (via TuttoMercatoWeb):

I found out about it after the match. It was fun; I didn’t know about it before. We’ll see how long it lasts. It’s felt really good at the start of the season. I’ve been given a lot of trust, and the team’s been playing well.”

Bologna Blocked Holm’s Move to Wolves in the Summer

According to Tutto Bologna, Wolverhampton Wanderers showed interest in Emil Holm in the summer transfer window. Bologna were quick to turn down their approach, as they consider Holm an integral part of their squad.

Bologna lost Sam Beukema to Napoli, Stefan Posch to Como, and Martin Erlic to Midtjylland in the summer. They thought selling Holm in the same window would have been too much.

The decision has turned out to be the correct one, as the Swede’s strong defending and attacking credentials have helped Bologna greatly. The Rossoblu are unbeaten in the games Holm has played this season.

Wolves, meanwhile, have been enduring a torrid campaign. They are without a win in 11 Premier League matches (D 2, L 9) and are sitting in 20th, seven points behind Nottingham Forest in 19th.

On Sunday, Vitor Pereira was sacked after Wolves’ 3-0 defeat to Chelsea. Rob Edwards is reportedly the frontrunner to fill the vacant position.

While history shows that West Ham United and Nottingham Forest should not yet panic in the relegation battle, Wolves are very much at risk. They have only scored seven goals in the Premier League while conceding 25. Their goal difference of -18 is the lowest in the English top flight.

Owing to their struggles, bookmakers are backing them to drop to the Championship. At the time of writing, Wolves are priced at 1/7 to be relegated at the end of the season.
