After leading Syracuse to the NCAA Men’s basketball championship in 2004, Carmelo Anthony seemed destined to become an NBA superstar. It’s rare to see a freshman dominant college basketball the way Anthony did. This dominance led to him getting picked No. 3 overall in one of the NBA’s greatest draft classes of all-time.

Anthony’s basketball career has been an up-and-down roller coaster at times. With his retirement drawing closer we will ask the question: is he a Hall-of-Fame player? Let’s review his resume.

Carmelo Anthony’s career in Denver

After getting drafted by the Denver Nuggets, Anthony quickly became one of the league’s best young players. He averaged 21 points and six rebounds game for Denver as a rookie. Anthony was named to the 2003-04 All-Rookie first team.

Anthony’s offensive game would explode in his third season, as he put 26 points per game. But, he surprisingly was not named to the All-Star team that season. He’d have to wait until the next season, in 2006-07, to receive is first selection. Anthony would go on to be named to the All-Star four times with the Nuggets.

Trade to the Knicks

After multiple defeats in the postseason, Carmelo Anthony requested a trade out of Denver. The Nuggets shipped him to the bright lights of Madison Square Garden.

Anthony’s time in New York was filled with drama between Melo and the front office. His relationship with former President of Basketball Operations Phil Jackson quickly deteriorated, and Anthony was sent to the Oklahoma City Thunder. 

During his time in New York, the Knicks made the playoffs twice. He averaged 24 points and seven rebounds during his time in the Big Apple.

Time in Oklahoma City

When Carmelo Anthony was traded, it signaled a new era of basketball for the Thunder. They were still looking to retool their lineup, and acquiring Paul George from Indiana gave the team their own version of the “Big-Three”. For a moment, it looked like there could be a new challenger to the Golden State Warriors throne.

There’s no doubt Anthony’s time in Oklahoma City got off to a rocky start when he quickly dismissed the notion of him providing a spark on the bench with the second unit.

Anthony was getting paid max-money, so why would he even consider coming off the bench? At times the Thunder looked like the best team in the NBA. The team entered the 2018 postseason as strong favorites to beat the Utah Jazz in the first round.

Utah was able to control the pace of the series and won in five games. Anthony was shipped to Houston before the start of the 2018 season, playing just eight games with the Rockets before being waived.

During his time in the NBA Melo has been a 10-time All-Star, made the All-NBA team six times, and won a scoring title.

Dominance on the international stage

Although he was on the 2004 Men’s Basketball team that won the Bronze medal and jump-started the overhaul of Team USA Basketball, Carmelo Anthony is one of the best team USA Players of all-time.

He helped lead the Men’s basketball team to three consecutive Gold medals in the Olympic Games and for his career averaged 10 points and five rebounds per game for Team USA.

His ability to attack the paint, along with a small three-point line, made Melo a lethal weapon in crunch time.

Will Carmelo Anthony make the basketball Hall-of-Fame?

When you look at Carmelo Anthony’s overall basketball resume there is no doubt in our minds he is a Hall-of-Famer. He won three gold medals, made 10 All-Star games, and averaged over 24 points and six rebounds per game for his NBA career.
