Justin Herbert prepares to throw the football

Justin Herbert, now fully entrenched as the Los Angeles Chargers‘ superstar quarterback as they embark upon their 2022 NFL schedule, really is that good.

There’s a reason he checked in at No. 3 in our rankings of the league’s top 32 quarterbacks heading into the offseason, and nothing has changed to move him down even a single peg.

If anything, he’ll have the ball in his hands even more frequently with Khalil Mack, JC Jackson, Sebastian Joseph-Day, and Austin Johnson helping lift this defense to the proverbial next level. And it certainly doesn’t hurt that the Chargers re-signed Mike Williams, added Gerald Everett, and drafted Isaiah Spiller to surround him with even more offensive weapons.

“I just think there’s a lot to build on. His experiences — I think so much as a young player at quarterback is the inventory of experiences. It’s kind of like being a rookie head coach; you learn so much every single day. And I think Justin building that inventory of the defensive structures, the defensive coordinators that he’s going [against], he’s only going to get better,” head coach Brandon Staley said during a May 5 appearance on The Rich Eisen Show, and it’s hard to disagree.

Herbert threw for 5,014 yards, 38 touchdowns, and 15 interceptions while leading the Chargers to a 9-8 record in 2021, and he’s gearing up to leave those numbers in the dust during an age-24 go-round that could result in a spot atop the AFC West.
