In the second week of Wimbledon, everything in doubles gets trickier. Singles players who advance in to the latter rounds tend to bow out of doubles, and then, there are the inevitable injuries from the tournament.
Both of those reasons are why there were three walkovers in Wimbledon Round of 16 matches on Day 8.
1. Laura Siegemund Opts Out Of Doubles
37-year-old Laura Siegemund has reached a Grand Slam singles quarterfinal one other time in her career, at the 2020 French Open. The three-time doubles Grand Slam champion (2020 US Open ladies doubles, 2016 US Open and 2024 French Open mixed doubles) is preserving her body for the second week of Wimbledon singles by opting out of doubles with partner Beatriz Haddad Maia.

Siegemund has not dropped a set through her four matches with the biggest upset against 2025 Australian Open champion Madison Keys in the third round. Her next test is the most difficult, against World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka who has been pushed to the brink in her three previous rounds, winning three sets by tiebreaker and another by a 7-5 score.
2. Barbora Krejcikova Is Also Out
2024 Wimbledon ladies singles champion Barbora Krejcikova was partnered with Chan Hao-ching for doubles. The pair has played great with a second round upset over French Open champions Jasmine Paolini and Sara Errani. Krejcikova is known for her excellent doubles play. She was part of the fantastic Czech duo with Katerina Siniakova that dominated ladies doubles for years with 7 Grand Slam titles (2 at Wimbledon), and Krejcikova has 3 Grand Slam mixed doubles titles also.
Krejcikova was suffering severely during her third round singles match with Emma Navarro. The three set loss left her in tears from the physical and mental strain. Krejcikova has dealt with injuries since late last season and had played less than 10 singles matches prior to entering Wimbledon to defend her title.

As a result, fans were saddened but not surprised that Krejcikova and her partner retired from doubles.
3. Jordan Thompson Is Out Of Doubles
Jordan Thompson was forced to retire from his singles match against Taylor Fritz on Sunday. As a result, he and partner Pierre-Hugues Herbert forfeited their Round of 16 match on Monday.
Jordan Thompson has also pulled out of doubles at #Wimbledon (with Herbert) due to the reason of “adductor strain secondary to known lower back pain.”

Thompson was enjoying the best Wimbledon singles success of his career with a fourth round appearance. The 2024 US Open men’s doubles champion was also a doubles finalist at last year’s Wimbledon with Max Purcell.
