Amanda Anisimova initiated a gutsy third set comeback from a break down against Linda Noskova to book her spot in the Wimbledon women’s singles quarterfinals. It is the second time in four years Anisimova is making a Wimbledon quarterfinal appearance. Aside from a 2019 French Opens semifinal appearance, Wimbledon is the Grand Slam where Anisimova has played her best tennis.

Anisimova and Emma Navarro are the only American women left in the draw with Anisimova slated to play Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova on Tuesday, July 8. Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova has never beaten Anisimova in three previous tries. Those three matches were on hardcourts, two settled in straight sets, and Pavlyuchenkova got her first set off of Anisimova at last year’s Mubadala Citi Open in Washington, DC.
Despite winning the WTA 1000 Qatar TotalEnergies Open in Doha this year, Anisimova is sometimes an afterthought because of the immense amount of American talent in the Top 30. She has played tennis on her own terms throughout her career including taking a self-imposed mental health break in 2023 which involved taking college classes and focusing on her off court interest in art.
Tragedy is unfortunately part of Anisimova’s story also. She was 18 years old when she lost her father who was also her coach, Konstantin Anisimov, suddenly in August 2019. Anisimova suffered a fatal heart attack at the age of 52.
A Healthy And Happy Amanda Anisimova Is Better Than Any Victory
Win or lose, fans like to see Amanda Anisimova happy and healthy. The 23-year-old is now enjoying the arduous tennis process and is frequently seen smiling and laughing in situations when she previously would have been harder on herself.
If Anisimova was able to lift the Wimbledon trophy, it would be bittersweet as her father would not be here to see the crowning achievement of her budding career.
There is a lot of tennis yet to be played. First is Pavlyuchenkova with a possibility of meeting Aryna Sabalenka whom she has defeated five times in eight attempts (but never on grass) in the semfinals on Thursday.
