Wimbledon Day 9: Amanda Anisimova And Taylor Fritz Keep American Hopes Alive

Americans Amanda Anisimova and Taylor Fritz earned their spots in the Wimbledon semfinals with wins on Tuesday, Day 9 of the tournament.  Both jumped out to quick leads but had some challenges before putting their matches away.

Amanda Anisimova

Amanda Anisimova fell to the grass after winning her quarterfinal match.  She won the first set and led 5-2 to in the second set. Anisimova had two match points in the tenth game of the second set; however, Pavlyuchenkova lifted her game and forced the tiebreak.

Anisimova kept her composure and hugged her sister and held her nephew Jackson who was celebrating her fourth birthday after the win. Her sister and family flew into London for this match.

Amanda Anisimova keeps the American women’s Grand Slam alive with her first semifinal appearance at Wimbledon and second Grand Slam semifinal (2019 French Open).

Taylor Fritz

Taylor Fritz has not played against Karen Khachanov since 2020.  The frequent practice partners know each other well and have been in the Top 20 for years so it is surprising that it has taken this long for them to meet again.

Fritz started the match on fire but cooled off with a lackluster third set.  There was a medical timeout, and times when I noticed Fritz touching his lower back.  It is not clear if that was the issue. In the end, Fritz pulled it out in the fourth set tiebreaker. He awaits the winner of the Carlos Alcaraz and Cam Norrie quarterfinal.

Taylor Fritz is the 2024 US Open finalist and is even more motivated to get another opportunity to play in a Grand Slam final in 2025. Injuries in the spring kept him from training and being at full strength in Roland Garros.

Amanda Anisimova and Taylor Fritz are already into the semifinals. Ben Shelton gets his opportunity to earn a semifinal spot with a Wednesday quarterfinal meeting with World No. 1 Jannik Sinner.
