Andrey Rublev is one of the select few top ranked players in action the week after Wimbledon. Rublev, World No. 10 by virtue of leaping four ranking spots this week from World No. 14, is the top seed at Los Cabos, and he has advanced to the tournament semifinals with a come from behind win. With that achievement, Rublev, 27, has now reached 45 career ATP semifinals.
“I’m super happy. In one moment I was thinking: ‘It’s over…’”

He also becomes the 7th player born in the 1990s to make 45 or more semifinal appearances. Rublev is currently tied with Dominic Thiem and Milos Raonic at 7th with 45. Stefanos Tsitsipas has 54, Grigor Dimitrov has 56. Daniil Medvedev has 59, and the far and away leader is Alexander Zverev with 74.
All of these players have or had successful careers, but only two Grand Slam winners have emerged so far from the group: Thiem and Medvedev.
Can Andrey Rublev Or A 90s Player Win A Grand Slam?
The 90s generation of male tennis players (including Taylor Fritz who is not among the seven listed above) seems to be the one caught in between the era of the Big 3, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic, born in the 1908s, and the current top men, born in the 2000s, Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz.
Beyond what Medvedev and Thiem have already achieved, will a player from this generation win another Grand Slam? As they get into their late 20s, it becomes more difficult because the players behind Sinner and Alcaraz are also charging up the rankings and looking for Grand Slam glory. Noteworthy examples are Jack Draper, Jakub Mensik, Arthur Fils, and Joao Fonseca. However, there are more including the young Americans, Learner Tien and Alex Michelsen.
A Grand Slam win does add to a player’s resume, but it does not define a career. All of these players, including Rublev, have been great players with or without a Grand Slam victory.
