NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series Championship Race: Qualifying, Layne Riggs’ Penalized Pole Position, Lineup At Phoenix Raceway

Layne Riggs doesn’t mind starting from the rear of Friday night’s NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series Championship Race at Phoenix Raceway.

With most of the attention focused on the Champion 4 pilots, regular-season champion Corey Heim, reigning circuit champion Ty Majeski, Tyler Ankrum and Kaden Honeycutt, Riggs stole the spotlight briefly, registering the fastest qualifying lap (134.796 mph), edging runner-up Chandler Smith by 0.017 seconds.

Despite winning the pole position, Riggs’ post-qualifying celebration was cut short, learning he would start from the rear of the 34-machine field and serve a pass-through penalty after the green flag for an unapproved adjustment, according to NASCAR.com. Crew chief Dylan Cappello was ejected from the finale.

“I actually wasn’t expecting that (and) I feel like I kind of messed up that lap a little bit,” Riggs said, as reported by SI.com. “I gave it my all there (and) I knew we were going to start in the back, but still just wanted to see the potential we had. Make sure that the adjustments we made from our mock qualifying run was better and it was.”

Here is where the Championship 4 drivers will start tonight.

  • P5: Honeycutt
  • P6: Heim
  • P8: Majeski
  • P21: Ankrum

Majeski (26.913 seconds) clocked the fastest practice lap Thursday night at the 1-mile desert oval.
