Christy experienced a disappointing weekend at the box office.
The boxing biopic about Christy Martin earned $1.3 million at 2,011 theaters. According to Box Office Mojo, it’s the 12th-worst opening weekend of all time for a movie that opened in at least 2,000 theaters.
In response to the financial woes, Sweeney posted an uplifting message about the film on her Instagram.
“I am so deeply proud of this movie. Proud of the film David made. Proud of the story we told. Proud to represent someone as strong and resilient as Christy Martin,” Sweeney wrote. “This experience has been one of the greatest honors of my life.”
The movie chronicles Martin’s rise in boxing as well as the difficult challenges she faces outside of the ring, including sexual abuse and attempted murder. Sweeney hopes this film can inspire women to speak up if they are in abusive situations. For Sweeney, that means more than box office numbers.
“Thank you to everyone who saw, felt, and believed and will believe in this story for years to come. If Christy gave even one woman the courage to take her first step toward safety, then we will have succeeded. So yes, I’m proud. Why? Because we don’t always just make art for numbers, we make it for impact. And Christy has been the most impactful project of my life. Thank you, Christy. I love you.”
Sweeney added, “This film stands for survival, courage, and hope. Through our campaigns, we’ve helped raise awareness for so many affected by domestic violence. We all signed on to this film with the belief that Christy’s story could save lives.”
Who is involved with Christy?
Besides Sweeney, Christy stars Ben Foster as James V. Martin, Martin’s coach and future husband who abused her; Merritt Wever as Joyce Salters, Martin’s mother; Ethan Embry as John Salters, Martin’s father; and Katy O’Brian as Lisa Holewyne, Martin’s biggest boxing rival.
David Michôd directed Christy from a screenplay co-written with Mirrah Foulkes.
Christy premiered to mixed reviews at the Toronto International Film Festival. Sweeney’s performance has received critical acclaim, giving her an outside chance to receive a Best Actress nomination at the 2026 Oscars.
Christy is now in theaters.
