New York Rangers general manager Chris Drury made the organization’s intentions clear.
Out with the old, in with the future.
Drury announced Friday that the Rangers would not offer Artemi Panarin a contract extension. He added he would help the team’s leading scorer find a team before the NHL trade deadline.
Panarin’s seven-season run in New York is about to end.
“It’s hard to say how I feel,” Panarin said, per The Athletic. “I’m still confused. But the GM decided to go in a different direction. I’m OK with that. I’m a Ranger player right now, so I’ll play every game 100 percent.”
At 34 years old, Pararin paces the struggling Rangers with 54 points, including 18 goals. The left winger remains a career plus-132 skater, but over his last 128 games, he’s a combined minus-26.
Regional scouts have been watching him for months.
Panarin, the 2016 Calder Memorial Trophy winner, scored two goals and assisted on another during the Rangers’ 6-3 victory over the host Philadelphia Flyers on Saturday night, ending a five-game losing streak. In seven games in January, he posted four goals among 13 points.
Panarin can choose where he goes next. The expiring 7-year, $81.5 million contract contains a full no-movement clause. With a reported preference to go to Vegas, BetOnline Sportsbook listed the Golden Knights (+200) as the sports-betting favorite to land Panarin.
The Golden Knights appear serious about loading up for a Stanley Cup run. They acquired defenseman Rasmus Andersson from the Calgary Flames in exchange for defenseman Zach Whitecloud, two top draft picks and a college prospect.
