Chelsea, who led 2-0 after 19 minutes then conceded three Manchester United goals, mounted a dramatic comeback thanks to two goals from Cole Palmer, scorer of a hat trick on Thursday in its 4-3 Premier League win.

The two soccer clubs went head-to-head in a crazy showdown that saw 28 shots on goal for Chelsea compared to 19 for Manchester United. The Blues and the Red Devils, who are both a long way from the top of the Premier League standings, put on a superb show in the first half, scoring a combined four goals in the process, and in added time the match was decided for the second time—this time in the Blues’ favor.

Chelsea put in an imperious first half-hour, dominating the game with intensity. Mauricio Pochettino’s men took full advantage. The first chance fell to captain Conor Gallagher, who was overlooked in the penalty area, giving the Blues the lead in the 4th minute. Brazil’s Antony then fouled Marc Cucurella in the box to give the Blues the lead in the 19th. The penalty was converted by specialist Cole Palmer, who has won twelve out of twelve penalties in his career.

Moises Caicedo made a terrible mistake that allowed Alejandro Garnacho to reduce the gap to one in the 34th, which turned the tide in the Red Devils’ favor. A few minutes later, Erik Ten Hag’s men equalized with a header from Bruno Fernandes in the 39th minute to head into halftime tied at 2 goals apiece.

After the break, Antony made up for the foul he had committed in the box in the first half. The Brazilian curled a perfect cross into the path of Garnacho, who headed the ball beyond the reach of goalkeeper Petrovic in the 67th minute.

Manchester United thought they had clinched victory, but Palmer decided otherwise. The 21-year-old striker first guided his side to an equalizer from the penalty spot, after Diogo Dalot had made light contact with Madueke in the tenth minute of extra time. Then, from a final corner one minute later, Palmer tried his luck with a powerful shot into André Onana’s goal, which deflected off the chest of Scott McTominay to essentially give Chelsea a walk-off win.

Despite the defeat, Manchester United remain sixth in the Championship standings, but trail fifth-place Tottenham in the race for Europe. Chelsea, meanwhile, have now gone six games without defeat and are now tenth.
