Juventus midfielder Nicolò Fagioli returned to the squad list ahead of the Italian side’s game against Bologna after serving a seven-month suspension for gambling on soccer games.

Fagioli, 22, was the first name that emerged last September in the betting scandal, as the Italian midfielder admitted to personally placing bets on soccer matches at illegal online betting platforms.

The Piacenza native reached an agreement with the Italian FA Prosecutor for a 12-month suspension, including five months being commuted to “alternative prescriptions.”

Fagioli was also fined €12,500 (£10,840; $13,180) after he was found to have violated Article 24 of the FIGC’s sporting justice code. He had placed over-under bets on games — foreign and domestic.

The Italian club announced Monday that Fagioli served his suspension, and he’s now back in the squad for the first time since last October.

The investigation became public in October 2023 when the name of Fagioli emerged as one of those alleged to have wagered bets on soccer matches at illegal betting platforms.

Newcastle midfielder Sandro Tonali was involved in the scandal

Fagioli was caught during the Turin prosecutor’s investigation into gambling. While scanning accesses and transactions, investigators discovered that Fagioli had been wagering on soccer games.

Newcastle midfielder Sandro Tonali was also involved in the scandal and was banned for 10 months for betting offenses while playing in Italy with AC Milan.

Tonali was recently issued another two-month ban by the English FA with the suspension to be served concurrently. Tonali is expected to be back at the beginning of the 2024-25 season.

Juventus will face Bologna on Monday in their first game after the firing of coach Massimiliano Allegri. Former Juventus defender Paolo Montero will lead the team for the last two games of the season against Bologna and Monza.

Current Bologna manager Thiago Motta is expected to be named the new coach in the weeks ahead, starting from the 2024-25 season.
