The MLS All-Star Game is upon us. The United States professional soccer league’s annual showcase of its best players is different than other all-star games in the major North American sports leagues. Fans still get to see their favorite players play together, but instead of taking on each other, the MLS’s best work together and take on a team of stars from another country. Here’s everything you need to know about the MLS All-Star game, including the game’s format, the 2022 roster, and how to watch.

2022 MLS All-Star Game Format

For the second year in a row, the MLS All-Star game will feature a group of American-based stars vs. a team of all-stars from Mexico’s LIGA MX.

This is the second year in a row where this game will put MLS vs. LIGA MX. In 2021, the match ended in a 1-1 draw and went to a penalty kick shootout. During the shootout, Damir Kreilach (Real Salt Lake), Dániel Sallói (Sporting Kansas City), and Ricardo Pepi (FC Dallas) converted from the spot.

On the LIGA MX side, Rogelio Funes Mori (Monterrey), Érik Lira (UNAM), and Salvador Reyes (América) couldn’t find the back of the net, and the MLS won 3-2 on penalties.

In previous years the MLS all-stars have taken on Spain’s Atletico Madrid (2019) and Real Madrid (2017), Italy’s Juventus (2018) and Roma (2013), England’s Arsenal (2016) and Tottenham Hotspur (2015), Chelsea (2012, 2006), Manchester United (2011, 2010), Everton (2009), West Ham (2008), Fulham (2005), Germany’s Bayern Munich, Scotland’s Celtic (2007), and Mexico’s Gudalajara (2003).

In 2002, the MLS all-stars played the USMNT, and in the other years (starting in 1996), the league played a more traditional East vs. West or U.S. vs. the World intra-MLS format.
