2022 U.S. Open Purse, Payouts: Matt Fitzpatrick Takes Home the Richest Prize in Major Championship History
Boy, that was fun, wasn’t it? In a back-and-forth battle between two players seeking their first PGA Tour wins, Matt Fitzpatrick outdueled Will Zalatoris and conquered The Country Club at Brookline for the 2022 U.S. Open title.
Not only did the Englishman secure his first major championship on Sunday, but he also secured the largest payday in major championship history. So, what was the record-breaking purse at the U.S. Open, and how much money did Fitzpatrick take home for his win?

Purses on the PGA Tour have exploded in recent years, and that’s especially true for the U.S. Open. Last season, Jon Rahm took home $2.25 million from the $12.5 million purse after his triumph at Torrey Pines, but he probably wishes he waited one more year to win his first major.
This weekend, the USGA raised the U.S. Open purse to a record $17.5 million. Fitzpatrick, after finishing off his one-stroke victory on the 72nd hole of the tournament, secured a massive check of $3.15 million. That’s the largest payout not just in the U.S. Open, but in any major championship in the history of golf.
Not a bad prize for your first professional win on U.S. soil.

Fitzpatrick earned the biggest paycheck of the weekend with his victory, but he wasn’t the only one who cashed out big time at the U.S. Open. Zalatoris and Scottie Scheffler, who both fell one stroke short and finished in a tie for second place, went home with more than $1.5 million each. Hideki Matsuyama, who carded a Sunday-best 65 to vault up the leaderboard, earned nearly $1 million for his solo fourth-place finish.
