Chargers HC Brandon Staley doesn't want a tie.

The band is getting back together in New Orleans. The Saints are hiring Brandon Staley as the defensive coordinator for Kellen Moore. It’s a reunion for Staley and Moore, who used to be colleagues in Los Angeles.

Brandon Staley Becomes Saints’ DC

Per NFL Network’s The Insiders, Staley will be the Saints’ new DC.

Staley spent the 2024 season as an assistant head coach with the San Francisco 49ers.

Staley was the head coach of the Los Angeles Chargers from 2021 to 2023. In 2023, Moore worked as the offensive coordinator for Staley with the Chargers.

Now, the roles are reversed in New Orleans.

After leading the Chargers to the playoffs during the 2022-2023 season, Staley could never recover from the Wild Card loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Chargers blew a 27-0 lead and lost 31-30 on a field goal as time expired.

The following season, the Chargers started the season 5-9.

In Week 15, the Las Vegas Raiders shellacked the Chargers by a score of 63-21. The Chargers fired Staley the next day.

Staley’s tenure with the Chargers ended with a 24-24 record.

After serving as a linebackers coach with the Chicago Bears (2017-2018) and Denver Broncos (2019), Staley became the defensive coordinator for the Los Angeles Rams in 2020.

Staley’s aggressiveness as a coach paid off, as the Rams became the No. 1 defense in yards and points allowed.

Staley Will Try And Help Kellen Moore Turn The Saints Around

With Staley as the DC and Doug Nussmeier as the OC, the Saints now have their two most important coaching positions filled on Moore’s staff.

Staley will be tasked with fixing a defense that allowed the second-most rushing yards (141.4), third-most total yards (379.9), and sixth-most passing yards (238.5).

The Saints went to the postseason in four consecutive seasons from 2017 to 2020. New Orleans has not been to the playoffs since, something Moore will try to change in 2025.
