Doug Nussmeier points his finger.

Kellen Moore is bringing a familiar face to be his new offensive coordinator. The New Orleans Saints are hiring Doug Nussmeier as their new OC.

Who Is Doug Nussmeier?

Per NFL Network’s The Insiders, the Saints are bringing in Nussmeier, the former Philadelphia Eagles quarterbacks coach, to become their new offensive coordinator.

First-year head coach Moore will still call the offensive plays.

Nussmeier and Moore have worked together for the last seven seasons.

In 2024, the duo helped the Philadelphia Eagles average 27.2 points per game (7th in the NFL) on their way to a Super Bowl LIX victory over the Kansas City Chiefs.

Nussmeier worked as the quarterbacks coach for Moore with the Dallas Cowboys (2019-2022) and Los Angeles Chargers (2023).

The hiring brings Nussmeier back to the Saints’ organization that drafted him in 1994 as a quarterback from the University of Idaho.

Nussmeier bounced around between the Canadian Football League, NFL, and NCAA between 2001 and 2017.

Nussmeier was the offensive coordinator for the Alabama Crimson Tide when they won the National Championship during the 2012 season.

Nussmeier’s son, Garrett, is currently the starting quarterback of the LSU Tigers.

Moore and Nussmeier Will Be Tasked With Fixing The Saints’ Offense

Moore and Nussmeier will now be tasked with fixing a Saints’ offense that was one of nine teams to average under 20 points (19.9) for the regular season.

Before the new coaching tandem can design an offense, they must decide who will be starting under center and if that quarterback will be Derek Carr.

Carr, 35, has salary cap hits of $51 million and $61 million over the next two seasons.

Carr previously told reporters he would restructure his contract to help the Saints get under the salary cap. However, the veteran quarterback is not willing to take a pay cut.

Moore remained noncommittal on Carr as the starter at his introductory press conference.

“I view it as Derek Carr is a tremendous starting quarterback in this league,” Moore said. “We’re fortunate to have him, and we’re excited to go through this process as we build this roster together.”

Cutting Carr would result in a $50 million deal cap hit. Even if the Saints designate him a post-June 1 cut, they’re still dealing with $21.5 million in dead money.

Expect a decision on Carr’s contract to happen before free agency begins in mid-March.
