Charleston Open: Anna Kalinskaya Upsets Madison Keys

Australian Open champion Madison Keys is now wearing a target. Madison Keys fellow WTA players elevate their games against her since she has become a Grand Slam champion. It happened at Indian Wells with Aryna Sabalenka, who was seeking revenge for the Melbourne match, in Miami with Alexandra Eala, and this week in Charleston with Anna Kalinskaya.
Kalinskaya missed the Australian Open with injury but is looking healthy now. She defeated Keys in Charleston in straight sets 6-2, 6-4.

Anna Kalinskaya’s greatest career successes have been on hardcourts, most notably last year as a 2024 Australian Open quarterfinalist and the 2024 Dubai Open finalist. She has never gotten past the second round at Roland Garros.
After the match, she called this win special and said she needed it for her confidence. Kalinskaya is currently ranked 33rd but was a career-high 11th in October 2024.
She is seeking her first singles WTA title to add to her three doubles titles.
Anna Kalinskaya Is Thursday’s American Spoiler
Sofia Kenin is on the court for a night match. Aside from Kalinskaya’s win, Americans swept the other singles matches. Jessica Pegula, Emma Navarro, Amanda Anisimova, and Danielle Collins won their Thursday matches and advanced into the quarterfinals.

In doubles, the all-American team of Caroline Dolehide and Desirae Krawczyk won their quarterfinal match. Peyton Stearns, teaming with Miami Open doubles champion Diana Shnaider, also won a quarterfinal match. Americans are looking to grab this doubles title as the 2024 champion team, Ashlyn Krueger and Sloane Stephens, did not compete this year.
Upcoming Matches
Kalinskaya will get the winner of the Kenin and Daria Kasatkina’s third-round match.
All-American quarterfinals between Jessica Pegula and defending Charleston Open champion Danielle Collins, and Amanda Anisimova and Emma Navarro are scheduled for Friday. The other quarterfinal is between Paris Olympics gold medalist Qinwen Zheng and Ekaterina Alexandrova.
