While speaking with ESPN’s Kat Terrell, Loomis spoke about Carr and how “excited” the organization is to have a quarterback of his caliber.
“I think we feel like we’ve got a guy we can win with,” Loomis said.
During his introductory press conference, new Saints head coach Kellen Moore remained noncommittal on Carr, complimenting the quarterback instead of declaring him the starter for 2025.
“I view it as Derek Carr is a tremendous starting quarterback in this league,” Moore said when asked if Carr would start for the Saints in 2025. “We’re fortunate to have him, and we’re excited to go through this process as we build this roster together.”
Loomis’ comments are much more direct than Moore’s statements.
“We feel fortunate to have Derek here, the experience he has,” Moore said. “He’s a big-time quarterback in this league.”
For the sake of accurate context, Kellen Moore was asked two direct questions today about where he stands on Saints QB Derek Carr.

With Carr returning in 2025, the Saints must address the soon-to-be 34-year-old’s contract.
Carr just completed the second year of his four-year, $150 million contract.
The Saints are a team projected to be over the salary cap, and Carr’s $51 million cap hit in 2025 is one of the contracts at the root of the issue.
“Yeah, it’s tight,” Loomis said about the Saints’ salary cap. “There’s no secret to that, and his [Carr’s] is a big number, so we’re going to hopefully be able to maneuver.”
Carr previously said he would not take a pay cut. However, the quarterback is open to restructuring his contract.
Per Terrell, the Saints could restructure Carr’s deal to free up $31 million in cap space in 2025 and make Carr’s 2026 salary cap number $69 million.
With the quarterback in place, Loomis will not have to get the Saints under the salary cap before free agency begins.
