For all of the talk about the retirements, withdrawals, and drama at the ATP Rolex Shanghai Masters which has taken out the top four seeds, the WTA 1000 Wuhan Open has produced the opposite result.
The best female tennis players in the world, with excellent competitors serving as spoilers here or there, are in the final eight as the draw continues to diminish. In even better news, the key players vying for the three final spots in the Race to the WTA Finals are in the mix.

Katerina Siniakova vs. Jessica Pegula
Jessica Pegula has a 4-1 head-to-head record against Katerina Siniakova who is better known for her doubles play. Siniakova’s lone win was on grass at the 2021 Bad Homburg Open.
Pegula is fighting for a spot in the WTA Finals and needs to outperform Elena Rybakina and Jasmine Paolini to stay in the hunt.
Siniakova took out one seeded player in her march to the quarterfinals, Diana Shnaider.
Partnered with Storm Hunter, Siniakova is also playing in the doubles quarterfinal against Chan Hao-ching and Jiang Xinyu.
Aryna Sabalenka vs. Elena Rybakina
Aryna Sabalenka and Elena Rybakina have played 12 times with Sabalenka owning the head-to-head 7-5. Since the 2023 China Open, they have played seven of those matches. They tend to alternate winners of the matches every other time, and Rybakina won the last match in straight sets at the 2025 Cincinnati Open.
Rybakina is trying to keep herself in the running for the 2025 WTA Finals so if there was ever a must-win situation for her in a quarterfinal round, this would be the one.
Sabalenka is trying to hold on to the World No. 1 ranking which could be challenged by Iga Swiatek depending on how the two finish the year.
Laura Siegemund vs. Coco Gauff
37-year-old Laura Siegemund is better known for her doubles skills, but she can be a spoiler in singles. She beat 2025 Australian Open champion Madison Keys at Wimbledon, and in an earlier round, she defeated Mirra Andreeva.
Siegemund is also alive in doubles and is slated to play the doubles quarterfinal on Friday also.
Coco Gauff has arguably been playing her best tennis since winning the French Open.
Siegemund and Gauff split their previous two meetings (2020 and 2023) though they have not played since the opening round of Coco Gauff’s maiden Slam win at the 2023 US Open.
Jasmine Paolini vs. Iga Swiatek
Jasmine Paolini has only won one set in the six previous meetings she had with Iga Swiatek. The latest match was at the 2025 Cincinnati Open final.
Paolini is fighting for a WTA Finals singles spot after securing her doubles spot with partner Sara Errani.
She is an endless bundle of energy and grit on the tennis court so it is particularly telling that she and Errani have withdrawn from doubles.
