Nielsen reported record-breaking streaming numbers for Happy Gilmore 2, the Netflix comedy sequel starring Adam Sandler as the titular golfer.
Happy Gilmore 2’s Streaming Numbers
When Netflix commissioned a Happy Gilmore sequel, they likely believed it would be a hit. No one could have predicted its runaway success.
According to Nielsen’s streaming data, Happy Gilmore 2 was the No. 1 most-streamed movie for the week of July 21 to 27 with 2.9 billion viewing minutes. That is the highest single-week total for a streaming movie since Nielsen began recording those ratings five years ago.
Happy Gilmore 2 edged out Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, which garnered 2.89 billion minutes in December 2022.
Keep in mind that Happy Gilmore 2 premiered on July 25, meaning all of those minutes came during its premiere weekend.
Netflix revealed that Happy Gilmore 2 became the biggest US opening weekend of all time for a Netflix film with 46.7 million views in its first three days. That was also the biggest opening weekend on Netflix for Sandler, who has released several movies on the service, including Hubie Halloween, Hustle, and Murder Mystery.
Sandler’s Netflix movies have recorded 61 billion viewing minutes on the platform since 2018. Murder Mystery currently leads the crop at 9.9 billion minutes.

— Adam Sandler (@AdamSandler) August 4, 2025
Nearly 30 years after Happy Gilmore, Sandler reprised his hockey player turned golfer for the long-awaited sequel.
After winning the Tour Championship in the first movie, Happy had it all: the money, fame, and the girl. Happy went on to have a family with Virginia (Julie Bowen).
Then, it all came crashing down after a tragic on-course accident.
Happy quit golf and lost himself as he drank away his sorrows.
When Happy’s daughter needs money to attend a European dance school, Happy picks up his clubs and heads to the golf course. Happy’s plan is to win the Tour Championship and pay for the tuition.
Things become complicated when a rival golf league tries to infringe on the Tour, forcing Happy to team up with the game’s best players to save the sport.
Besides Sandler, the actors reprising their roles from the original for the sequel include Bowen as Virginia, Christopher McDonald as Shooter McGavin, and Ben Stiller as Hal L.
