Justin Fields readies to throw a ball.

The New York Jets are making a quarterback change as Justin Fields heads to the bench.

Jets Bench Justin Fields

Fields is heading to the bench.

Per The Athletic’s Dianna Russini, the Jets are benching Fields for Tyrod Taylor.

The news comes after coach Aaron Glenn said he would be “evaluating everything” after the Jets’ 27-14 loss to the New England Patriots.

“I’m evaluating everything,” Glenn said via Jets.com. “I’m evaluating myself, the players, schematics, coaches, I’m evaluating everything. So, I don’t want to just place everything on that, that one situation [quarterback]. I’m just looking at everything, because as a head coach, that’s my job, to make sure that I put this team in the best position to go win games.”

Fields finished 15 of 26 for 116 yards and one touchdown in the loss to the Patriots. While Fields has been an efficient runner, his passing numbers are some of the worst in the league.

Fields has thrown for 1,259 yards (29th), seven touchdowns (tied for 29th), and one interception in nine games. Fields is the leader of the Jets’ passing attack that ranks last in the NFL with 139.9 yards per game through the air.

Fields has thrown for less than 200 yards combined in his last two starts. He has thrown for less than 100 yards in four of nine starts.

Jets’ 2025 Outlook

Fields is not the only driving force behind the Jets’ 2-8 record. Injuries to key offensive players, including wide receiver Garrett Wilson, have plagued the 28th-ranked offense in terms of total yards (281.5).

The defense has been gutted of the team’s best players. The Jets traded All-Pro cornerback Sauce Gardner to the Indianapolis Colts for wide receiver Adonai Mitchell, a 2026 first-round pick, and a 2027 first-round pick.

New York also traded defensive lineman Quinnen Williams to the Dallas Cowboys for defensive tackle Mazi Smith, a 2026 second-round pick, and a 2027 first-round pick.

Those trades should benefit the Jets’ future while hindering their present-day success.

Fields has now been benched for the third time in his professional career.

Stepping in at quarterback will be Taylor, a veteran of 15 years. Taylor has thrown for 379 yards, three touchdowns, and three interceptions in three games this season.

Taylor started for Fields in Week 3’s loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The quarterback finished 26 of 36 for 197 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception.

The Jets now travel to Baltimore to face the Ravens (5-5) in Week 12.
