NFL: Pittsburgh Steelers at Denver Broncos

Justin Fields and the Pittsburgh Steelers defeated the Los Angeles Chargers 20-10 in week 3. The Steelers are 3-0 on the season and first in the AFC North.

Fields had his best game under center as a Steeler in week 3. He went 25 of 32 for 245 passing yards, one passing TD, one interception, and had a six-yard rushing TD. This was his best game as a Steeler and it came against a tough Chargers defense.

While the rushing attack could not get going against the Chargers, the Steelers trusted Fields to air it out and he delivered. The 32 pass attempts were the most he has thrown in three starts and he was very efficient. This game was a big confidence booster for Fields and the offense.

As Russell Wilson continues to recover from a calf injury, Justin Fields has put who the starter should be to rest. Along with a stingy defensive performance by the Steelers, Fields was the other main reason for the victory in week 3.

Below, we discuss if the Steelers can win the AFC North and a playoff game with Justin Fields as the starting QB.

Can The Pittsburgh Steelers Win The AFC North?

The Pittsburgh Steelers are 3-0 on the year and in first place in the AFC North.

One thing Tomlin made sure of was reducing the offensive penalties. Tomlin brought in refs during practices on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday leading up to their week 3 contest. Usually, Tomlin brings in refs just for Friday’s practice but after numerous holding calls in week 2, he wanted this improved quickly. It paid off and the Steelers were efficient on offense.

Justin Fields had his best game under center for the Steelers. He completed 25 of 32 passes for 245 yards with one passing TD and one interception, to go along with a six-yard rushing TD. This was the first interception thrown by Fields in three games but it did not hurt the Steelers in the end.

In a contest where the Steelers could not muster yards on the ground, Fields was able to produce through the air, which is an encouraging sign for the former first-round pick.

Fields was able to spread the ball around and looked good and comfortable doing so. Calvin Austin III had the best game of his career, recording four catches for 95 receiving yards and one receiving TD. George Pickens caught five of seven targets for 57 receiving yards. Meanwhile, Pat Freiermuth was targeted five times and had four receptions and 33 receiving yards.

While the schedule gets tough in the second half of the season, if the Steelers’ defense can keep up their level of play, and with Justin Fields getting better with each start, to go along with a 3-0 start, there is no reason to think the Steelers can not win the AFC North.

Can Justin Fields Help Lead The Steelers To Their First Playoff Victory Since 2016?

It is hard to believe but the Pittsburgh Steelers have not won a playoff game since 2016.

However, this is the best roster the Steelers have had in a few years.

The defense has been incredible and will remain so as long as TJ Watt stays healthy.

The problem for the Steelers in recent seasons has been their offense.

Fields has improved in each game this year, putting up his best performance as a Steeler thus far in a tough week 3 contest against the Los Angeles Chargers. If Fields can continue to improve and get more comfortable in Arthur Smith’s offense, this Steelers team has enough talent to compete in the AFC.

With offensive numbers and passing yards down across the NFL, the Steelers seem to have found a winning formula: play very good defense, do not turn the ball over, and be efficient on offense.

If this continues, the Steelers will win the AFC North and host a postseason contest. Justin Fields should continue to get better and the Pittsburgh Steelers are suddenly in good position to win their first playoff game since 2016.
