Chiefs aim for three-peat

Patrick Mahomes will be going for his fourth Super Bowl MVP award on February 9, but who has won the award in the last 10 years?

The Kansas City Chiefs will be looking to make history at Super Bowl LIX, as Patrick Mahomes and co. aim to win the Lombardi trophy for the third consecutive time.

Standing in their way will be Jalen Hurts and the Philadelphia Eagles, as the two face off for the second time in three years.

Mahomes will also be searching for his fourth Super Bowl MVP award, after winning three in 2020, 2023 and 2024 – which would move the Chiefs QB to just one behind Tom Brady who holds the record with five.

With that record in touching distance, we decided to look at the last ten Super Bowl MVP winners.

Last 10 Super Bowl MVP Winners

1. Super Bowl XLIX (2015): Tom Brady – New England Patriots

Tom Brady guided the New England Patriots to their fourth Super Bowl victory in 2015, as the iconic franchise beat the Seattle Seahawks 28-24 at the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona.

Brady contributed with four passing TDs and 328 passing yards to help his side clinch a victory – establishing the Patriots as one of the best franchises in NFL history.

This was Brady’s third Super Bowl MVP award and moved him level with Joe Montana for the most MVP awards in history.

2. Super Bowl 50 (2016): Von Miller – Denver Broncos

After a 15-1 season, the Carolina Panthers were favourites going into Super Bowl 50, however, the Denver Broncos had different ideas.

From the statistics in the regular season, this was the best offense vs the best defense and it was the latter that came out on top, as the Broncos held the Panthers to just one TD.

Gary Kubiak’s men picked up a 24-10 victory and claimed their third Lombardi trophy, with star linebacker Von Miller winning the MVP award.

Despite boasting an elite QB in Peyton Manning, the Broncos linebacker won the award after five solo tackles, one assist and 2.5 sacks – becoming the fourth linebacker to win the award.

3. Super Bowl LI (2017): Tom Brady – New England Patriots

Once again, Tom Brady picked up the Super Bowl MVP award and made history as he became the first player to win claim this accolade four times.

The Patriots clinched their fifth Super Bowl trophy in 2017, beating the Atlanta Falcons 34-28 at the NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas.

During the match, Brady contributed with 466 passing yards and helped his team find a victory by adding two passing TDS.

4. Super Bowl LII (2018): Nick Foles – Philadelphia Eagles

One of the more interesting MVP awards in recent years came in 2018, as Nick Foles claimed the prize despite being the Eagles’ back-up QB behind Carson Wentz.

Wentz was ruled out of the playoffs after picking up a major injury at the end of the regular season, after many tipped him to win the NFL MVP.

Foles stole the show at the U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, Minnesota and helped the Eagles beat defending champions, the New England Patriots 41-33.

The Eagles QB contributed with three passing TDs and 373 passing yards to pick up the MVP award – this was a huge story as a QB who was second-choice at the start of the season out shined Tom Brady in the Super Bowl.

5. Super Bowl LIII (2019): Julian Edelman – New England Patriots

The New England Patriots returned to the Super Bowl once again, picking up their sixth and most recent Lombardi trophy.

Bill Belichick’s side beat the Lose Angeles Rams 13-3 in the lowest scoring Super Bowl of all time, as there was not a singular touchdown until the final quarter.

This lack of scoring meant that Brady was out of the MVP picture, failing to contribute with a passing TD and Patriots wide receiver, Julian Edelman, won the award after making 10 catches for 141 yards.

6. Super Bowl LIV (2020): Patrick Mahomes – Kansas City Chiefs

The Kansas city Chiefs have been the most dominant side in the NFL for several years now and Super Bowl LIV marked the beginning of this dominance.

Beating the San Francisco 49ers 31-20 at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida, Andy Reid picked up his first Lombardi trophy for KC.

Star QB, Patrick Mahomes, managed to win his first Super Bowl MVP award after achieving 286 passing yards, two passing TDS and one rushing TD.

7. Super Bowl LV (2021): Tom Brady – Tampa Bay Buccaneers

In a last hurrah situation, Tom Brady one his fifth and final Super Bowl MVP award to extend his record and put some distance between himself and second place.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers beat the Kansas City Chiefs 31-9, in what was looked at as a passing of the torch between Brady and Mahomes.

However, Brady was not ready to hand the torch over in the Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida and Mahomes failed to contribute with a TD for the first time.

This was Brady’s first year away from the Patriots and he smashed records, becoming the oldest player to win the Super Bowl and Super Bowl MVP.

8. Super Bowl LVI (2022): Cooper Kupp – Los Angeles Rams

The Los Angeles Rams beat the Cincinnati Bengals 23-20 at the SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California to win their second Super Bowl.

Cooper Kupp was awarded with the Super Bowl MVP after making eight catches for 92 yards, a carry for seven yards and two TDS – including a game-winning TD on fourth down.

He became the eighth wide receiver to win the Super Bowl MVP award and as you’re about to see, the last player to win the award that isn’t named Patrick Mahomes.

9. Super Bowl LVII (2023): Patrick Mahomes – Kansas City Chiefs

The Kansas City Chiefs QB returned to the Super Bowl final to face the Philadelphia Eagles, as Andy Reid’s side won 38-35 at the State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona.

Mahomes cemented his place as one of the elite QBs in the NFL’s history, completing 21/27 passes for 182 yards, rushing for 44 yards and adding three touchdowns.

The Chiefs QB was dealing with a major ankle injury, however, in a game deciding drive Mahomes made a vital play by rushing for 26 yards to reach a first down on the Eagles’ 17 yards line.

KC would go on to get within field goal territory and convert, leaving eight seconds on the clock and Jalen Hurts’ Hail Mary fell short – meaning the Chiefs clinched their third Lombardi trophy.

10. Super Bowl LVIII (2024): Patrick Mahomes – Kansas City Chiefs

The most recent Super Bowl MVP award fell to, you guessed it, Patrick Mahomes, as the superstar QB guided his side to a 25-22 victory over the San Francisco 49ers.

The match was forced to overtime and the 49ers had a lapse of judgement, asking for the ball first meaning the Chiefs would have a chance to return even if Brock Purdy could find a TD for the 49ers.

Mahomes was the star once again, completing 34/46 passes and two TDs, including a game winning passing TD to Mecole Hardman Jr.
