Dallas Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd told reporters ahead of Monday’s game against the Brooklyn Nets that star center Anthony Davis doesn’t have a timetable for the next update on his hand injury.
“I think that’s sometime this week that he’ll talk to the doctors, but there is no schedule or timetable on when he’s going to make that announcement,” Kidd said.
ESPN’s Shams Charania and Tim MacMahon reported last Friday that Davis sustained ligament damage in his left hand and could miss several months if surgery is required.
Anthony Davis Seeking Second Opinion
Davis, 32, is getting a second opinion on his injured hand after sustaining the injury during the fourth quarter of a Jan. 8 loss at Utah. He appeared to injure his left hand while he was defending Lauri Markkanen on a drive.
The former No. 1 overall pick exited the game with 2:08 remaining and did not return. He was reportedly “doubled over in pain” in the tunnel of the arena, according to MacMahon.
Amid a slew of injuries, Kidd is doing everything he can to help the Mavs win. Dallas is currently 15-25 and sits 12th in the Western Conference standings, 1½ games behind the Clippers.
“We’ve been through this before, not just with AD, we’ve been hit with a lot of injuries over the last few years,” Kidd added. “Next man up mentality. You gotta play, you gotta be a pro.”

Since arriving in Dallas as the centerpiece of the Luka Doncic trade at last February’s trade deadline, Davis has dealt with multiple injuries that have limited him to just 29 total regular-season games.
In addition to the hand injury, Davis also suffered an adductor strain in his Mavericks debut last season that sidelined him for 18 games. He then missed 14 consecutive games this season due to a left calf strain.
Davis also left a nationally televised matchup with the Warriors on Christmas Day because of right adductor soreness, which sidelined him the final two games of 2025.
Raptors, Hawks Pursuing Davis Trade
Davis was mentioned in trade rumors involving the Raptors and Hawks before the injury announcement was made. With this latest update, the 10-time All-Star seems less likely to get dealt prior to the Feb. 5 deadline.
It’s unclear whether both Toronto and Atlanta are still interested in Davis.
MacMahon reported Jan. 8 while on ESPN’s Howdy Partners that Davis and his representatives are pushing for a trade to a team that would be open to offering him an extension.
Davis is currently in the first season of a three-year, $175.36 million contract.
“I think that based on what I’ve been told, based on what I’m hearing, AD’s agent is reading the situation and basically saying: ‘Hey, it’s in my client’s best interest to get traded before this deadline,’” MacMahon said.
“So I do believe there is going to come a push from that side, despite — you know, honestly, AD, family guy, nobody wants to uproot their family in the middle of a season. But, you know, again — the preference is comfort. The priority is getting paid again.”
