After earlier wins against Jelena Ostapenko and Madison Keys, Filipina teenager Alexandra Eala did it again.  She defeated a third Grand Slam champion in the Miami Open in the quarterfinals, World No. 2 Iga Swiatek.

Eala outplayed Swiatek and played cleaner tennis, fully maintaining her confidence and composure.  She was superior in her second serve percentage and took advantage of break chances (8 out of 10 service breaks). She arrived as a wildcard in the Miami Open, ranked 140th.  After this win, Eala rises to World No. 75 in the live rankings.

Toni Nadal was at the match to watch Eala, a graduate of the Rafael Nadal Academy.

The tennis world reacted to this monumental upset.

Basien Fachan made an interesting player comparison.  He said: “I feel like I’m going insane… Am I watching 19-year-old Alexandra Eala or prime Petra Kvitova?!”

Christian’s Court calls it: “one of the biggest upsets in tennis period.”

Prakash Armitraj of the Tennis Channel called her play “inspirational.”

Esc.ape said:That stunned look on her face – unbelievable! Whatever happens next, Eala will always be known as the GS Champ slayer at the Miami Open.”

Andrea Petkovic of the Tennis Channel said it is amazing that Eala backed up her previous big wins against Ostapenko and Keys with this win over Swiatek.  Petkovic said that it is even harder to do than to win a big match.
