NASCAR Cup Series driver Chase Briscoe, in his first season as driver of the No. 19 Toyota, keeps trying to prove himself as a worthy successor to the retired Martin Truex Jr.

Despite winning his fourth race in 35 outings this season, Briscoe went out of his way to thank teammate Ty Gibbs for the winning overtime push at Talladega Superspeedway. Briscoe executed a last-lap pass of Bubba Wallace and held off runner-up Todd Gilliland, Gibbs and Wallace over the final quarter-mile, securing the YellaWood 500 title and his first trip to the Championship 4 race at Phoenix Raceway.

“Ty Gibbs, incredible teammate there,” Briscoe told NBC Sports. “I honestly would not have won that race without Ty. An amazing team effort. I can’t believe I won a superspeedway race. I haven’t done it at any level.

“Normally I’m scared to death, a nervous wreck around this place. Today, I had such a peace.”

Maybe now, Briscoe can start feeling he belongs in his place at JGR.

Briscoe joined teammate Denny Hamlin as the first two drivers to qualify for the Nov. 2 finale in the desert.

“It hasn’t hit me,” Briscoe said. “We’re going to Phoenix.”
