NASCAR Savagely Mocks Richard Childress Racing on Twitter During New Hampshire Race, Concluding a Bad Week for the Organization
Last week was a bad one for Richard Childress Racing. The surprising announcement that rising star Tyler Reddick would leave the organization after the 2023 season for 23XI Racing sent shock waves through the sport and understandably left the organization in disbelief.
Sunday’s race at New Hampshire added to the rough week as Reddick finished 21st and Austin Dillon finished two spots behind. But it wasn’t so much the finishes that stung as much as what NASCAR’s official Twitter account tweeted out during the race, mocking the organization for its response earlier in the week to Reddick’s announcement.
Richard Childress Racing responds to Tyler Reddick announcement
Less than two weeks after Tyler Reddick won his first-ever Cup Series race with Richard Childress Racing, the young driver shocked the team and the industry when he unexpectedly showed up on a Toyota media call and joined Denny Hamlin to announce that he would be competing with 23XI Racing in 2024.
The stunning news drew a large reaction from the NASCAR community. RCR responded with a statement on Twitter, conveying it was unhappy with the decision, albeit through an odd choice of words.
“We’re proud of the success Tyler Reddick has found at Richard Childress Racing,” the statement read. “We’re focused on winning a championship in 2022 and 2023, although timing of this announcement could not be any worse.”
NASCAR mocks Richard Childress Racing
During Sunday’s race at New Hampshire, both RCR cars were never in contention. Unfortunately, Dillon’s lackluster performance was exacerbated in the third stage during a pit stop.
That’s when the 2018 Daytona 500 winner approached his pit stall and began to turn in but never made it there. Kevin Harvick was exiting simultaneously from a couple of pit stalls behind, and his right front made contact with the No. 3’s left rear, sending him for a spin.
Harvick got away while Dillon was forced to sit and wait for the congested area to clear. Moments after the incident, NASCAR’s official Twitter account tweeted about it and mocked RCR in the process.
“The timing of this pit road incident could not be any worse for @KevinHarvick,” the tweet read.
While it was indeed bad timing for Harvick, who was in contention for the win, the word choice was by design, and anyone who had seen the RCR tweet earlier in the week knew exactly what it was talking about.
Austin Dillon had a bad day
Unfortunately for Dillon, who is the grandson of Childress, that wasn’t the only time he got air time for something bad. Just past the halfway point of the race, and during the middle of a caution, cameras caught the driver and Brad Keselowski aggressively trading paint.
Replays showed it was Dillon who initiated contact, with the No. 6 car promptly responding and driving hard into the door of the No. 3. After the race, when asked, Keselowski said he wouldn’t address the situation in the media and would talk directly to Dillon. The RCR driver said he had no interest in discussing the matter with his counterpart.
It was a bad week at RCR. Who would have ever thought NASCAR would pile on and make it worse?
