Russell Wilson talks on the field.

One day after signing with the New York Giants, Russell Wilson said he expects to be the starting quarterback when the season begins in September.

Russell Wilson Expects To Start With Giants

Wilson made things clear: he expects to start under center in Week 1.

“I expect to be the starter and come in here and be ready to rock and roll every day,” Wilson said on his introductory Zoom on Thursday via SNY. “To be able to lead, this team is looking for someone to lead them in every way in terms of the process in the offseason, during the season, our habits and thought process, and how to create a good winning culture and how to establish that and how to build on the things we do well and the things we need to do.”

Wilson signed a one-year contract worth up to $21 million, including $10.5 million guaranteed.

Wilson joins a quarterback room that includes Jameis Winston and Tommy DeVito. Wilson sees New York as a chance for him to “win” and join a proud organization.

“Being in New York, it’s an exciting place to play,” Wilson said. “It’s a place that wants to win. It’s a place that knows how to win and has won before.”

Unfortunately for Wilson, the Giants have not won recently. The team is coming off a 3-14 season, the third-worst season in franchise history.

Will The Giants Draft A Quarterback?

Just because the Giants signed Wilson and Winston does not mean drafting a quarterback is off the table.

New York currently owns the No. 3 pick in the NFL Draft and will definitely consider a quarterback if Miami’s Cam Ward or Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders falls to them.

Even if the Giants elect to draft a quarterback in rounds two or three, Wilson’s mentality will not change.

“If we draft a quarterback, we will make sure that he does everything he can to be ready to go and be prepared with his mentality,” Wilson said via ESPN. “But for me, it’s about the process of winning. I’m focused on winning, what I can do as a quarterback of the New York Giants to help us win and to do everything that we can to lead.”

Wilson went 6-5 as the starter for the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2024. Wilson threw for 2,482 yards, 16 touchdowns, and five interceptions in 11 games.

Wilson and the Steelers lost to the Baltimore Ravens in the Wild Card round.
